Spyware free Kazaai was looking around, and i found this site: » www.refosearch.tk/its an installation of Kazaa that has: - No Adware - No Spyware - No banners - No bitratelimit for mp3 files - No irritating websites loaded into KaZaA - No BDE Viewer - No Bonzi Buddy |

The .dll is to spoof Kazaa:
!!!! IMPORTANT !!!! A dummy DLL file called "cd_clint.dll" is placed in the installation directory. This is a required file for KaZaA. Normally this file is a part of a spyware program called Cydoor. This dummy file however is completely harmless. So do not delete it when it is detected by a program such as Ad-aware.
Does it work without it? |

Thanks, found it interesting. Little confusing on some points.
First- added 2 more sites to the hosts file, will check later to see. Bonzai Buddy and Brilliantdigital
Second- page says will prevent Bonzai Buddy from installing, I guess it really means loading, since it is installed already. I removed the button, but registry says it is only hidden now, so maybe hosts will add another step, I'll be checking it.
Third, I have active scripts set to prompt, and I deny most. Didn't see any pop-ups, even from the the zeropaid link at the bottom (which says it gives pop-ups). But had Popki (pop-up killer) on hand just in case.
While I know very little of Audiogalaxy I saw a link to an edited .dll with Gator components removed. Interesting. No matter how much I learn, there is always a ton more I don't know. But for newbies, I recommend learning hosts file, it is very useful for blocking junk. |

Noob to anything other than WinMX here. Thinking about trying something else out (since I seem to be "missing the boat")..At the bottom of this link it says the following...
"!!!! IMPORTANT !!!! Due to some changes in the FastTrack network (which is used by RefoSearch) the current version of RefoSeach has problems connecting to the network. The same applies for the 'old' version of Morpheus and old versions of KaZaA and Grokster. RefoSearch will not be available until further notice."
Is that "old news" and is this "spyware free" download working? TIA JDM [text was edited by author 2002-03-10 10:44:25] |

Nope. Kazaa looks for the cd-clint, that is its payment center (spyware generated) and will not run without it. The dummy file is just that, a non-working look alike that lets Kazaa think things are fine. Very different size from the origional. I have read that windows will look in the Kazaa folder first, then in the system folder for the dll, so I will be trying the dummy only in the kazaa folder sometime this week to see if that is enough. That way it will not be in my system folder and the chances of it getting overwritten are a lot less. |

WARNING...if you dont have a pop up stopper that web site will put you in an endless loop of ads, and god knows what js script. I have been running kazaa spyless for three weeks now using the dummy dll, your better off doing it manually as most of us have. It is very easy to do, just follow the threads in this forum. I would be very wary downloading the whole application from that web site. Your better off getting kazaa from the kazaa web site, then easily downloading the dll file and running adaware. Here is the link on how to do it correctly and manually. » Here's how to disable the Kazaa spyware There are also other threads explaining how to do it, just go back a couple of pages. I would NEVER download an application that doesnt come from the applications web site or for that matter uses java script to place endless loops of ads to your comp to the point you have to shut down. Get the REAL kazaa from the web site AND THEN modify it manually with the phony dll. ITS all very easy! [text was edited by author 2002-03-10 15:41:27] |

Iron, that site is NOT cool at all! It should be taken to the jail forum. You should be downloading kazaa from kazaas website and then modifying it manually. |

I didn't get one pop up;) BUT, I had my volume down so they could have been being shot down one after another with Pop Up stopper and I missed it! Is the "manual" way pretty straight forward? How is the download working for people that have tried it from this link? Thanks..JDM |

jdm...first run ad/aware and delete anything that comes up so your comp is clean. THEN go to kazaas website and download the REAL application. Run ad/aware again and delete anything that came up from installing kazaa. NOW go to here » www.cexx.org/dummies.htm and download the clint dll file. Unzip it and put it in your kazaa folder. Now run ad/aware again and that dll file will pop up. Its ok becouse its a dummy file and will make kazaa think you have the spyware installed. DO NOT delete it from adaware, just exclude it. Now you have spyless free kazaa and the correct way of doing it! |

storm, that sounds pretty straight forward to me. Thanks for the quick "kazza for dummies" version:) I think I'll try it out. Never strayed from WinMX much, I never liked the "others". Since nobody ever talks about (or is happy with) WinMX I figure I should try it. ? JDM |

You will like it jdm..just like the old morpheus. Just dont do it by downloading the site bombay reccomended. NEVER download an application that doesnt come from its original site especially when that web site is filled with java script and endless pop up adds. MODIFY IT MANUALLY.

oops... i didn't realize that site had pop ups everywhere. must be my firewall.
anyway i posted that site because the kazaa lite works absolutely fine for me, and im just too lazy to de-spyware it myself. im sorry if it didn't work out for everyone.
anyway, after morpheus stopped working, i've been looking for another p2p app, and this is the best i could find so far. i'm trying gnucleus out now... i'll see how it goes. |

I had no problems at all with the Kazaa Lite version. Just follow the simple instructions on the web page...and you should be good for go. I also didn't get any pop-ups on the download site. Must be that my Pop-up Stopper is doing it's job huh? [text was edited by author 2002-03-14 08:21:55] |
