ihatedslr posted : Saying enough isn't going to get you anywhere. Go ahead and strike. There are always people who will fill your shoes. I'm just saying unions are run by greedy folks just like corporate execs. They are in it for their own salary. Ditch them and figure out another way to negotiate your employment terms. I was a tech, too. and before that an enlisted soldier.

telcotech posted : Jeff - what happens after everyone starts wearing a shirt and tie to work? Everyone will be managing something - but who will perform the actual labor to make the product or provide the service? Skilled trades often require 4 or more years of formal apprenticeship training, plus another 5 to 10 years to be considered "good" at it. This sounds a lot like the commitment that students that have the money to attend college have to make. So the next time you're looking down your nose at a technician or other skilled person because they didn't go to college "to get ahead" - think twice. All wealth comes from labor. We in labor are just saying "enough" to being exploited any longer.

The reason these top executives get away with these outrageous salaries is they spent a lot of money buying politicans to make laws and regulations that benefit them while putting the working class at a disadvantage. We are expected to compete with slave wages in 3rd world countries while the big shots transfer more of the company profits their way. If you think they deserve their money just look to similar foreign companies and see what their top executives make. You'll find that US top executives make far more than their contemporaries overseas. When there is such a surplus of labor it's not so easy to negotiate a decent salary when there are 1,000 equally qualified people who would take your job for less. There has to be a balance of power between business and labor or we'll lose the middle class altogether.
--
RIP my babies Buttons 1/15/94-2/9/07, Beamer 7/24/08, & Bows 12/17/94-10/11/09

mike656 posted : I'm sure that there are many hard working Verizon union employees, I happen to know one, but what about the employees of (insert union here) who don't strive to do their job better and more efficiently? They are the people who are bringing down the union way of life and giving them a negative image to the rest of us.

I have a family member who has been with the same union, same job for almost 30 years, working a position that is worth slightly above minimum wage, but he makes around $40k a year and only started recently paying anything for health benefits. He has made mistakes that would have lost his job many times over if he didn't have the level of protection that the union provides him. I just simply don't understand why people feel entitled to so much in the way of benefits, pension, and job security for working what are considered entry level or low level positions.

IMO if every union member, government employee, or other similar group had to suddenly work competitively like the rest of us, many would be out of a job in an instant.

ITALIAN926 posted : We've been without a contract since last August, Verizon wants to strip the workers of nearly every single benefit, with no wage increases, and you say the union is holding people back.

Whats really sick is if Verizon succeeded in their demands, that CEO of ours would get millions in bonuses for stripping 45,000 middle-class Americans of their quality of life.

What has he accomplished since last August? He created 45,000 disgruntled, unhappy workers, and squashed most of the morale the workers had.

Little bit of sense for ya. Without Lowell Mcadam, Verizon would be completely fine. This company cant function without US and it was proven last August. We built this damn company with our sweat ,blood and lives, it is more MY company than his.

The amount of money these CEO's make is disgusting. Impress us Lowell, knock your salary down to $60-70,000 a year and see how you can live. Impress us one step further and invest that saved $22million difference into a few TV town franchises.
