The price doubles again. I love 16x10 but I'll probably get a 2560x1440 soon. It's still more vertical pixels than 1920x1200. 1920x1080 bugged me because it was less than 1600x1200 and not much more than the 1280x1024 I had for years.

So I'm not as bewildered as I was when I was using Newegg as my sole source of prices, but it is still pricey for a display in 2012, IMO. Maybe I'm just asking for too much. Is $350 really too much to ask?

Why so expensive beyond 1920x1080/1200?

The cheapest resolution up from that (besides 1920x1200) is $680 for a 27" at 2560x1440, which costs more than twice as much as the 1920x1080 27" I bought two years ago!

1920x1080 is just big enough to comfortably fit two browser windows side by side. Apple does it right by having their 27" iMac at 2560x1440, but that starts at $1700, and while Macs are fun, they are pricey and I'm a PC guy - I like building my own computer to my own specifications for a reasonable price.

So what's the deal? Surely there are many, many more like me who find 1920x1080 fine for gaming but would like more space for other tasks. What will it take for manufacturers to bring 2560x1440 to the masses without costing more than the computer itself?
