Using surge protection with cable

Hi. I just wanna know if my OOL connection is affected negatively in any way by using a surge protector connected to the cable along with two splitters before connection to my SB4100 modem...?

Oh, and here are my signals...
Signal to Noise Ratio 32 dB
Down Stream Power Level -14 dBmV
Up Stream Power Level 58 dBmV

Your levels aren't good, your modem should be directly off the first split (or as close as possible) with nothing in between the modem and the line.

I'm also connected by USB and my average OOL ftp speed is 710 kb/s. Isn't dat good for USB???

If you're satisfied, that ain't bad w/USB. Would be even better w/ethernet.

A surge protector will not hurt your connection and in fact it is a good idea to use one. Spend a few bucks and do not get the $3.99 one.

As far as you signals go, the downstream is on the borderline; the upstream is too high and is out of spec, and your S/N is OK.

Normal Ranges are:

Receive: -15dbmV to +15dbmV
Transmit: 30dbmV to 55dbmV
Carrier/Noise Ratio: >30dB

You should try to get the MODEM off the first split. That should help with your signal levels.

Hey Miester_V,

Make sure the surge protector that you buy passes both forward and reverse. As Irish said, "Spend a few bucks and do not get the $3.99 one". The cheap one WILL NOT pass forward and reverse signals.

You will lose some signal through the surge protector. Since your CM signals are border line, the suggestion to come off the first split should overcome the loss of the surge protector.

Good luck
