My tweaking won't stay!!!!!!!!!!!

For some reason....even though I successfully download and install the windows 98(large) registry and even though every thing seems to perform at least 5-6 times better....when I shut of my computer for a while and I open it again...its like the same all story even though there is no change in the settings or parameters that were entered in the first plase!Any ideas guys?????

sounds like a squeeky windows glitch on your machine,,, rewrites the last working registry as if you've crashed,,,, you are using a gracefull shut-down and not just crashing out.

Remember what they say,,, the tweaking wheel gets the grease.

You have some other problem not related to your DSL speed. When win98 reboots it scans the registry, and if it finds a problem of any kind-it will restore a backup 'good' copy of the registry, therefore you either have some other problem you need to resolve, or your making a mistake when you make the DSL tweaks. First, ignore DSL and reboot your machine a few times, watching for error messages as it starts. Also, right click my computer, click properties, device manager, and look for yellow or marks on devices.
When your system appears to reboot successfully, try 1 of the tweaks, reboot and see it your change is still in the registry. If no- you still have another problem- If yes-continue tweaking and get your DSL up to speed. Good Luck.

I had the exact same problem. What I was told to do to fix it worked beautifully. Apparently after applying the tweak, all worked well. My download speed jumped from 200k to 500+k. My problem was NETZERO! Theres a glitch between netzero within the registry and the tweak applied which causes it to go back to the default setting. If you have it,UNINSTALLED it now if you want your speed to stick. Hope this helps. Let me know your outcome.

Smile---I read all the advice! Great advice from all!
I went through the same thing and the first thing I did was choose a new ISP such as Netscape 4.73 or Internet Explorer 5.0 which your system already has! You have to make a thorough uninstall of the browser that your using now! Then install your new browser of choice! I'd recommend IE 5.0 because it has the newest updates to networking and other necessary files for DSL! Also remember to reinstall your DSL software again!
Next go to dslreports.com and do another test! If you have a log already from before compare them both! If you then need tweaking do it step by step very carefully to ensure each tweak applies and continue from there! What I did with each tweak was to resart my computer to ensure each tweak applied itself to my registry!
A thing that is often overlooked when using a test site is that there are millions more people on the web during business hours than say after 9pm! Off peak testing is really the best time to test DSL for speed! It's 3pm and my latest test speed was half it's normal in comparison to an evening test!
Another tweak site you might want to check out is »www.grc.com which is a great site for info if you'll take a few minutes to read it! It has helped me and I'm a network administrator for a large corporation! If I can help e-mail at kasper55@hotmail.com! Good luck my friend and happy browsing!
