DSL Router for Multiple On-Line GamingI have three computers connected over a LAN using a Linksys 4-port hub. Computer (A) has two NICS; One NIC connects to the LAN, the other NIC to a DSL Modem (Covad DSL 604/128). Computers (B) & (C) access the internet via computer (A) using ICS.
I want to reconfigure to allow all three computers to play games like Q3 on-line simultaneously. Having researched the issue at this site, I'm considering buying a Linksys BEFSR41 DSL Router. The router will replace the hub. I like the centralized security offered by a router, hiding my LAN from the net.
Please let me know how the setup that I am considering will affect latency? I have heard that a router can increase the ping even if only one of the computers is playing on-line. |

Yeah it will increase ping time... Less than 1ms, you won't even notice it. The major thing that might happen for your Q3 pings will all 3 are online is the 128K upload. You may need to tweak some settings in Quake to have less packets being sent out because your line can only upload so much. This isn't an issue for me once the gateway problems are fixed. I have 784K sdsl so I tried for the heck of it 4 computers on different tribes servers. No latency was affected at all. -- President and Founder of ASE Computer Repair.
