kilrathi posted : Problem is back today, same thing packet loss on the upstream at regular intervals, and this is first day here in rockaway since June 1(back when problem also occured) when temperature been above 88F. So I start to suspect this could be problem caused by heat/temperature affecting some outside equipment...

kilrathi posted : Well it seems its not related to heat since the problem is back since 7pm... and intervals are same with the upstream packet loss.

So my theory that whoever had the illegal device on illegal tap hooked up last year that was causing this kind of problem may have his cable hooked up again is something i have to consider again. It fits same pattern as last year, the person would get home around 7-8pm and usually problem continued until 6am, on weekends would occur most of the time and some days would occur whole day. Now so far this is still just a guess but I have to think why the problem was gone most of the day yesterday(maybe person was working sunday or was gone on sunday) and was gone most of the day today, but now in the evening is back.

Wonder if it stays till morning just like last year...
Of course I have tech visit tomorrow but its 4-6pm so not sure what the chances are of tech being here when the problem is actually occuring.

Only other thing I can think of is that 1 channel is having noise and modem uses 1 upstream channel at any time and maybe just sometimes it uses that channel based on specific conditions and this would also explain the problem coming and going like this.

Also starting at 9pm tonight log is full of T3 timeout errors something that wasnt occuring much if at all for past 3 months.

UPDATE 11pm

I spoke with l3 tech again tonight frustrated with the problem and the person I spoke with tonight *DID CONFIRM* that he saw upstream snr drop on saturday and again today corresponding to when I see the problem vs other days and past few months of this year. He also mentioned a lot of correctables/uncorrectables occuring on the upstream on saturday and today at the time of the call, I asked him to note this on the account.

Now this appears same exact pattern and problem like last year so I am trying to find out how to go about for tw to find out if they reconnected a tap to the address that was disconnected last year to solve the noise on the system due to bad/illegal device at address. Because its quite possible that was rreconnected and same kind of problem is occuring again. Last year similar problems with upstream noise started around may and after many visits, calls and finally l3 escalating the problem to engineering team problem was fixed 4 months later in october(illegal/bad device at address few blocks away).

update tuesday

Whole day everything was clean since 6am, however at 7:20pm the upstream noise returned and its occuring same way as before at regular intervals causing about 2-4% upstream packet loss, I am pretty sure there are correctables occuring on upstream now as there are also large delays occuring at intervals even when data is not lost. I will monitor whether the problem tonight will end once peak usage time is over or whether it stays occuring all night long.

Tech was rescheduled for saturday as having him today between 4 and 6 wouldnt have accomplished anything. I suspect this is tied to illegal/bad device on illegal tap somewhere in area and when that person is home and have it on the noise occurs, could also be magnified during peak usage time. So I hope saturday it will occur during day just like last weekend.

UPDATE

Tuesday the problem did not appear much except for few minutes at 7pm.

Wednsday the packet loss on upstream is back since 1pm and continuing (so far 5pm). Weather wise both days are same, only more wind, so this is not heat related it seems. Again this points to bad device on illegal cable and the person who uses it was possibly away tuesday but its home today...

Another possibility is that the noise occurs only on one upstream channel and whenever that channel is used by the modem thats when the problem is visible, and since this is controlled by cmts and one cant really tell which channel is used for upstream its hard for me to narrow down which.
<TABLE WIDTH=96% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

kilrathi posted : At 6 am the problem dissapeared, however at 1 pm today the problem is back same as it was yesterday. Wonder if its coincidence that the problem started on june 1, maybe something was done with scheduled work or something was turned on on the system here, just guesswork. If pattern stays same as yesterday the upstream noise will get worse in the evening and continue being the worst all night until 5 am or so.

This is very similar to pattern when there was illegal cable causing this last year, the person had the device on when they were home and awake and thats when the problem would occur. Its weekend so I am wondering how the pattern will change or continue over weekdays. ITs a steady noise/error rate at regular intervals or pretty close to regular intervals. It affects small packets udp/tcp the most it seems. Had to change appointment to tuesday because prefer to have 4-6pm slot over 12-2 as the problem at least yesterday was much more visible at those hours.

UPDATE MONDAY.

Sunday mid day the temperature dropped by about 10F degrees cooler than previous day same time problem dissapeared, now I am not certain just guessing that the issue is magnified by hotter weather and only visible once temperature is around 80+ and sunny. Today monday so far there is no issue as well but the weather is much cooler, I will reschedule tech for a day maybe next weekend when weather is hotter or if th eproblem returns before that.

kilrathi posted : I was on phone again because problem is a bit worse right now actual speed is starting to be affected by increased upstream packet loss. Whats weird though is the dlsreports line quality tests show no problems everything clean but actual streaming to twitch, voip and other packet loss tests all show packet loss on the upstream at steady intervals.... plus the tech again told me there are no issues with upstream snr or antyhing on the node on their end that they see.... so my thought is could modem be doing this as if going bad, seems odd for that be the case.

However, my neighbor have time warner or rather his roomate does and he left for a week, his modem and stuff is turned off but I can take it for the night plug here and see if the packet loss is same just for a moment, if everyting is fine then I will know its the modem, if not well then still a mystery.

UPDATE: I tested different modem ubee DDW3611, even though its provisioned for different slower plan it still locked on same amount of channels 8/4 and showed about same specs on signals, however even though upstream is slower on that provision the modem did show upstream packet loss just as well, which means my motorla 6141 is defnitely not at fault here. This saves me wasting time to try to swap a modem from tw during the week in hopes of that being the solution.

Both modems show pretty much perfect signal stats in ranges that you would want everything to be but both have upstream 2-5% packet loss and currently in the evening actual upstream speed is affected on my modem thats provisioned for 5mbit upstream it barely hits 4 at this time where otherwise i never had issue with upstream speed touching 5 or close to it.

Update I checked line test here at 10pm and it showed problems too of 5% packet loss on the smallest packets(which indeed is a problem for voip and gaming). I woke up at 3am to see if anything was better when things are least used but the problem persists and upload speed is maxing at 4mbit instead of what i normally was always able to reach 5mbit besides just the packet loss on the upstream.

In addition since about 11pm log is full of these warnings:

TEK Invalid - Invalid Key Sequence Number

Thats also something that have not been occuring much and when it did it would be once per 2 weeks but tonight more than 10 times...

kilrathi posted : I have to report that upstream packet loss is back today in full effect, constant 2-5% packet loss on the upstream only to any site/location. I did see some tw vans around last night but since network status page is down i cant verify there is something going on in the area. Been trying to reach level 3 today but after waiting about 40 minutes waiting I gave up for now.

I have been delaying fios installation every week and its set about month from now which is my backup plan in case upstream issue is back for good like last year. I hope not. Will update once I can reach level 3.

I finally reached level 3 on 3rd try without much wait(luck lol) but I got someone I never remember speaking with and this person wasnt very helpful at all basically didnt even wanna hear me trying to explain the problem at all, I did get technician reguler schedule started of course this kind of technician wont be able to do much with this situation as I have learned this before.

My best guess is that since this is hottest day here by the ocean of the year the heat maybe affecting something here. Previously a plant tech here about month ago did tell me that the amp and system here is running very hot and while he wasnt here about that but repairing a tv channel issue he did say he wouldnt wanna see this amp when it gets hotter...

I noticed when I reboot the modem and it locks 30.6Mhz upstream channel as primary ID channel I have more packet loss than if modem locks 23.8Mhz channel. It almost reminds me of the problem and about same thing I saw last year. I really hope that if this is outside temperature related something is done because weather is only gonna get hotter.

kilrathi posted : I dont believe we are on same node, as for that host, with me packet loss occurs between me and the node I believe so all the data after that is very misleading in my case, also most of my routing does not go through that route, give me a host to trace that u go through that hop, although I route through tenge-0-2-0-4-nycmnyo-rtr2.nyc.rr.com & tenge-0-5-0-8-nycmnytg-rtr001.nyc.rr.com in most cases. If you having almost no upstream speed call l3 and ask them to check upstream snr, if its clearly off spec(which it would have to be to cause that kind of slowdown) then its signal issue, however the node itself that you are on maybe experiencing packet loss(I had that kind of issue on to of signal issue last year once).

kilrathi posted : Yes, I am aware about verizon fios support is much tougher to get hold of, however what good is this twc support, l3 sees the problem, logs it and then plant tech arrives and he doesnt care about what l3 logged and collected on the account, they just try to claim its no big deal or they cant see it or best one is where they say well noone near u reported it so we wont try too hard. Last year I must of had so many regular techs forced to visit even though level 3 guy logged and noted what the problem is exactly and even he was frustrated when I told him each time nothing was really done or even looked at the notes by actual plant techs.

I had regular tech here today and he quickly looked at account notes and my data and got me plant technician to come here friday. Advantage I have now is that this problem is about same as last year, and then it was solved and there was exact reason for it, so now they have an idea what to look for. Fios install is in a month so I give this long for TW to fix this, I really hope they do. This regular noise on the upstream is very annoying, if it was just slower speed I could live with it but when there is packet loss at regular intervals its simply not something I can stick with.

I will report back after plant tech comes on friday.

kilrathi posted : After logging on tw side for 3 days situation looks similar to what was happening last year. There is some upstream error rate to me once again.

Tonight I have same darn packet loss on the upstream at regular intervals as I did before october when last problem was fixed. When regular tech comes tomorrow I will try to see if he can find out whether tuesday or wed they reconnected or fixed cable for an address that had illegal cable that caused this same exact problem last year. I wonder if maybe time warner reconnected the tap to the illegal cable/device that was causing it in the first place. The damn problem is so annoying, cannot play games withour major problems or time outs, cannot stream to twitch properly and most of all since I now do contract work for a company for some game addons and it requires syncing with their server and transfering a lot of small files back and forth there are major problems with this now when this packet loss occurs.

This is so frustrating. I wish time warner encrypted all the regular channels already so that people are less likely to hook up any kind of garbage tv to any left over tap to get tv because some of that crap causes noise on the system and affects paying customers.

update

out of frustration checked verizon site(they always skipped this side of street for fios availability for now) and it shows now i can get up to fios quantum at my address... for the first time i remember, i am making an order to double check its really true, although will call tomorow and check... cause i cannot believe my eyes.

However, if true this maybe end of the line for me and tw unless the tech that comes tomorrow dont give me any typical excuses about not recommending this issue to plant tech i will be possibly movin services.

I really like time warner but i cannot deal with this upstream packet loss over and over again its simply too much frustration.

Will update what happens with the regular tech visit tomorrow. A lot may depend on it.

update #2 verizon fios order done, of course i wanna see if they end up canceling this because few months back when I called they said my home is not elgible even though homes across street where.... so even though it let me complete order i am not 100% sure its gonna come true, but install date is selected for april 10. So this gives tw about month to change my mind assuming this order sticks.

I may end up keeping time warner for month or 2 even if I get fios installed just to see if they maybe can fix this upstream problem fast and of course to see if the fios has no issues. Exciting times ahead(maybe).

update #3 to be fair i tried 2 different lines overnight that are ran from 2 different taps and without any splitters even brand new cable running from grounding block to modem etc.... no matter what I do there is upstream noise at regular intervals, I seen this last year and as the weather gets warmer it will only get worse plus as more and more people restore their homes and reactivate their service here in rockaways after hurricane sandy this noise will be worse so if I fail to get tw to track it down now I will start having horrible upstream issues down the road beyond whats happening now. How do I know? I went through this last year, and so far I suspect the address that caused this last year maybe reconnected without tw doing proper checks. Basically after hurricane they just go around and due to amount of work they just reconnect anyone that asks, reconnect taps cut off wires that are broken etc... so its highly possible they reconnected the address that originally caused this issue with some bad device hooked up to the tap. I will try to zoom in with camera on the taps at that address tomorrow to see if I can make out for sure before the tech arrives. Oh and before anyone says maybe hurricane caused issues with the noise.... no when I reactivated service around november 28 there was 0 problems, no noise no packet loss. This only started after wed(l3 told me on wed they did node maintance because tuesday they got report of some issues in this area) ever since that day the problem continues so thi sis not caused by sandy.

kilrathi posted : Yea I have taken care of scheduling the typical tech to come out and also setup logging by level 3 that will end on sunday. ON wed when I called l3 did verify that avg snr did drop compared to day before but for now he will refrain for saying more till the logging session is over.

Now since twc network status page is down I am unable to check whether there is ongoing issue reported in area, or work is performed again and what not like in years past so its a bit more frustrating. I tried calling l3 techs tonight but was stuck for 50 minutes waiting and had other things to do, may call again later if things degrade any further.

One positive note possibly is that I have seen multiple twc vans drive around here today.

small note however is that this issue seems to be a bit different than the old one in the past that was caused by illegal cable(which I still know where it was).

update:

even at 5am packet loss and uncorrectables are occuring.

In fact, at 5 am right now the upstream packet loss is at regular intervals just like last year before they unplugged that tap to illegal cable that was causing it, same exact issue at this moment.
Good thing I have the address saved and even know what tap it was, gonna take a picture and see if they maybe rehooked it by some mistake past wed. Plant Techs were shocked back in october as to what could of been hooked to that tap in the house that was causing such noise onto entire system here but they did verify it was it back then.

Wonder what it is now.

Oh and I have covered all my bases too, i have 2 lines running to my house from 2 different poles and I think they are even off 2 different amplifiers as one pole line turns to side street and other is off line on main street, they have different power values by a long stretch so I tried both and same problem occurs on both, the line in my house is new and no splitters. Plus the problem did start wed when tw did confirm they were fixing issue that was affecting node so either they screw something up or someone else was fool enough to rehook that 1 tap that was causing this problem all year last year till oct.

However, since downstream channels show growing correctables/uncorrectables something that wasnt occuring with this problem back in 2012 I hope this is something they can see and solve faster than what it took them last year(nearly a year).

In any case I am not paying a dime again until this is fixed.
<TABLE WIDTH=96% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

upstream lost bytes/packet loss to location 1

upstream lost bytes/packet loss to location 2

kilrathi posted : So before october last year I had an issue with upstream packet loss that was finally fixed when they determined it was caused by illegal cable hook up 2 streets from here, since then aside from hurricane sandy there have been no issues until this wed night.

That night supposedly there was some issue with the node reported and next morning(thrs) there was mainteance performed that affected everyone on the node, by afternoon thrs I was told by level 3 tech that work was complete.

However, after that work I noticed t3 timeouts and invalid tek sequence errors in my modem log and half the downstream channels had correctable and some uncorrectable codewords growing at steady rate, nothing too alarming but it was growing and before wed this was not occuring never at the rate it was occuring now. I have called to have me logged for few days and opened also a ticket.

Today, friday things are getting out of control, now after 6pm all 8 downstream channels show erratic growth of correctables and uncorrectables. Further, there is packet loss on the upstream especially.... about 2-5% and growing as peak time usage approaches.

Again before wed I havent had these issues since october.

Now I am hoping this will be addressed fast. I have labored through almost a year of upstream packet loss before october and was hoping for at least a year of no problems.

I will update and post some results etc once I am less frustrated.
