AsyncTea posted : Okay guys,

I've changed the program somewhat. It will now copy the files at startup to your (specified) ramdisk. If you like you can also directly run a process in that directory (only the exe filename is required, so it will work for other folding/seti projects as well). Then it can happily fold, and when the program is shut down (manually or by windows) it will copy all the files straight to the given fixed HD. At startup again, the process repeats :)

I've added a few extra things, and removed some as well. It will not use the process list anymore. The program will just do the above mentioned. But, it can copy a backup every xx minutes, if you like.

For any problems:
"Copy From:" should be the ramdisk
"Copy to:" should be the fixed hd

At startup it will do the inverse (to->from) and at the exit of the program (or after the 'backup' time) (from->to)

I would suggest that you if you use it, make a backup yourself of the ramdisk as well. Just to be sure. Every Windows is different, and maybe it does some fancy stuff my PC doesn't :)

The link is again: »quadrantwars.dnsalias.ne ··· disk.zip (source code included)

if you want the program to startup automatically, simply drag the program's exe into the "Startup" folder of the start menu (as shortcut), or if you do no t like that edit the registry...
--
AsyncTea

Also, if Win2k crashes when you have open files, all those files will be "virtually gone" anyways, so a power failure will probably cause the files to disappear anyway. But I might add something like "Copy files every xxx minutes", so you can still copy a backup every now and then...
--
AsyncTea

'RAM Disk mover' utility

AsyncTea posted : Since a few days I've been using a RAM Disk driver so I have a 'real' HD in explorer, which just resides in memory. Now, Folding doesn't go noticeable faster, but your HD can finally turn itself off, since all the folding files are 'saved' to memory, when a frame is completed. Also, if you have a virus scanner, it will scan your folding files every time when a frame is ready.

Now that sounds good? Well, there is one negative thing about this RAM disk... if you reset, WITHOUT saving back the files in the ram disk (just from explorer to another logical/physical HD), all the data will be lost. Now, if you're like me in the fast world, you'll forget to do that, wasting your just 4*35min folded frames of ProteinA :)

That's why I've made a nice small program, which uses a small amount of memory, and doesn't take up too much cycles either (ie: it doesn't show even a second of time in taskmanager). This program allows you to select a process, a "source dir" and a "destination" directory. if you shutdown the select process (ranging from folding to any other program), it will copy the files from the source dir to the dest. dir.

The program is in VB6 (and will only run on Windows platforms), so you might need the dll's... if people are really interested in the program, I might port it to ASM someday... I've included the source as well in the zip. (So if you want to see how to get the process list, it might be interesting for you as well :))

My program: (also containing some important additional info for the ram disk usage/installation! So make sure you read the readme file)
»quadrantwars.dnsalias.ne ··· disk.zip

The Ramdisk driver (100% free):
»www.arsoft-online.de/pro ··· ramdisk/

I hope anyone is interested in it... The RAM disk has many advantages imo, and it works for me :)

Regards,
Almar
Programmer Quadrant Wars
--

AsyncTea
