Linux for streaming video?

Suggestions please: I use Win7 to stream video. And with that goes all the usual anti this and anti that.
The box is used for streaming video and nothing else, so no need for spreadsheets, wordprocessing etc. I have searched the net for a version of Linux that would just boot into a browser .
I use three sites for streaming so would have them sitting in the Bookmarks Toolbar.
Box is Duo, 3 gig ram, Sata.
All suggestions/help greatly appreciated.

To be clear, you are not looking to setup a Linux box to stream video from, you just want to be able to watch streaming video on it, right? And the only thing you want is a browser, no desktop environment?
You could set this up on most any desktop distribution. By copying a browser's .desktop file found in /usr/share/applications to /usr/share/applications/ you can log straight in to a browser.
You could also look into getting Chromium OS running on your machine, which would perform a similar function, probably better. »chromeos.hexxeh.net/

You'll be fine for most everything as long as it doesn't use Silverlight. Even with the pretty decent moonlight emulation, some sites (that use DRM, like netflix for example) won't work.

So any distro, use Firefox. Should be fine.

An OS that just boots a browser? Sounds like you need ChromeOS. You can get the open source Chromium OS at: »www.chromium.org/chromium-os

Another option you may want to consider is XBMC. »xbmc.org/
It is a media center that can stream videos and play local or networked content. It may be overkill for what you want to accomplish.

Yes, exactly. I do this in Win7, only thing is everything else goes with it. The AVS will cut in which is easy enough to click on the X but would really like a bare bone setup.

I will look at Chrome. Many thanks.

Maxo, I agree. I looked at XBMC and as you surmise it is an overkill.
Thanks for your reply.

Might want to look at »www.webconverger.com/
Linux boots to browser. Close the browser, it re-opens.
