[Other] Model 2500 and PAP2T-NA or similar ATAs

Hi everyone,

I thought I would find tons of topics about this, but I've been out of luck (or I can't figure out the search function?).

I'd really like to get one of those old Model 500 phones like we had at home when I was a kid, but at the same time I don't want to be stuck with pulse and I'm not even sure if it would work with my ATA or voip.ms. So I decided I would get a Model 2500. My friend has a Model 500 that he uses with his cable telephone connection, it works like a charm.

A quick search on Google shows that no one has managed to have the 2500 work on a PAP2T but there are very few topics so it's probably not scientifically accurate. I wanted to know if anyone got this phone working (and by that, I mean will it ring when someone calls) with settings similar to mine. I don't own a phone and they don't sell for cheap, so if someone had a good experience maybe I'll give it a shot. I'm comfortable tweaking inside the phone and with the ATA's settings.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Boy are you making me feel old.

When you started talking about "old" phones, I thought you were talking about rotary (pulse) dial.

And indeed the "500" from Western Electric (design also licensed by others) is a rotary phone.

But the [2500] is a full Touch-Tone (DTMF) phone. It even has the [*] and [#] keys which were missing in the earlier Touch-Tone phone, the [1500].

Because it has touchtone dialing, I can't see why it wouldn't work with any ATA. Your ATA would need to be set for the G.711 (PCMU) codec, your provider would need that as well.

Your main potential issue would be REN, it seems to me. But the [2500] phone should have a REN of 1.0 according to my reading.

It should work just fine, but I've no experience using the PAP2T.

Our house is full of old phones like that because I collect them. None of the ATA's I've used so far have had any trouble ringing one or two of them (such models as OBi100, OBi202, Grandstream HT702, and Ooma Telo)

My only phone set to ring in the house is a 1937 Western Electric 302, steel cased even. Could kill someone with it, and the ATA's have no trouble ringing it as loudly as the POTS line does.

Thanks for the input. My main worry was the ringer. If it works on your systems I guess it's worth trying.

Now I need to find a Northern Telecom for some nostalgia!

For information, for those who might be looking for this, the Model 2500 I got worked out of the box without any modifications. I could only get my hands on a Western Electric, all Northern Telecom are in pretty bad shape.

I'm happy!

I collect those and the WE Trimlines and Princess phones; they do work well on the ATA.

If you ever wanted to use rotary dial, pickup a Granstream HT502. Very similar to the PAP2T except they support rotary dialing.

BTW, the WE's are easier to get parts for. Have fun!

Good to know. My parents still use two model 500, should they switch to VOIP, I'll make sure to get them this ATA.

I have 3 Western Electric Model 500 phones (different colors) and one Northern Electric (Northern Telecom) phone. All are rotary and they work (dialing out) with InnoMedia MTA6328-2Re.

I like their rings. I turn off all cordless electronic phone ringers but use them for the convenience.
