telcodad posted : Comcast has now made its X1 platform available to businesses nationwide:

Comcast Makes Emmy Award-Winning X1 Platform Available to Businesses Nationwide
Comcast Business Now Offers New Video Service to Bars, Restaurants, Hotels, Gyms and More
Comcast press release, Business Wire - March 13, 2019
»www.businesswire.com/new ··· tionwide
quote:
Comcast Business today announced the company’s award-winning X1 video platform is now available to the millions of bars, restaurants, hotels, gyms and other businesses across Comcast’s footprint. X1 for Business includes easier search and navigation, voice control and a picture-in-picture, sports content companion called the X1 Sports App that includes team and players profiles, statistics and real-time, game-specific data.

The launch of X1 for Business arrives just in time for the NCAA Basketball Tournament, one of the most profitable times of the year for sports bars and restaurants when fans want to watch multiple games at once and be among friends and co-workers. According to the American Gaming Association, 70 million college basketball brackets are filled out annually and last year, first-round coverage averaged 8.6 million television viewers, up from 8.2 million in 2017.

“Businesses across the country can now offer their customers the same award-winning video experience that millions of people experience everyday in their living room,” said Christian Nascimento, Vice President Product and Premise Services, Comcast Business. “X1 for Business is a game-changer – whether it’s a bar or restaurant integrating sports stats into the viewing experience, a hotel or gym giving customers an easier way to find what they want to watch or a small business helping their guests pass the time in the lobby or waiting room.”

Today, about two-thirds of Comcast’s residential customers have X1. X1 for Business will offer businesses and their customers:

• Voice Control: Businesses can use the X1 Voice Remote to quickly search for networks, shows and movies, change the channel, get recommendations, navigate content and more. There are more than 24 million residential voice remotes deployed and there were 8 billion voice searches last year alone.

• On-Screen Guide: The easy to use on-screen guide and search functionality allows employees to focus on serving customers, and not searching for programming. A view of the last nine channels makes accessing popular and most-watched content easier than ever.

• Sports Content: Provide customers with up to the minutes sports updates. The X1 Sports app brings real-time scores and statistics to sports like baseball, football, basketball and NASCAR, alongside thein-game action

• Accessibility: The X1 talking guide is the industry’s first and only voice-enabled television user interface that reads aloud selections like program titles, network and time slots, serving as a solution for TV fans who have a visual disability.

• Language of Choice: Bicultural customers can quickly change the guide and channel listings from English to Spanish and find Spanish-language and SAP-enabled programming through advanced filtering directly within the experience.
:
X1 for Business is now available to businesses across Comcast’s footprint. Customers from across industries will begin upgrading their service to enhance experiences such as: in-room, voice-controlled TV watching in hotels; real-time sports stats and content at workout stations in gyms; and intuitive, easy-to-navigate channel options while at the office.
:
To learn more about X1 for Business and Comcast Business’s Business TV solutions, please visit: »business.comcast.com/learn/tv

Results could include video clips from programming that the customer is entitled to as part of their subscription and also list of content that they aren’t entitled to, but maybe could be if they added that programming to their pay package.

In addition to assembling those clips into the DVR, the system could also be made to send alerts to the viewer on their mobile devices when a clip on the query topic is available for viewing.

Lintz said the system is about two years in the making. “Doing real-time search is hard,” he stressed, noting that the VIPER team has some ideas on how to include an alerts feature that doesn’t overwhelm the customer.

Comcast hasn’t announced when it might turn the project into a commercial product. “It’s a real system in our lab,” Lintz said.

Though VIPER has had this under development for some time, some of that work appears to stem from Comcast’s acquisition earlier this year of Watchwith, a video tech firm that had built a deep video metadata system that can decipher what’s happening inside a move, TV show or sporting event on a frame-by-frame basis.

Watchable was Comcast’s first foray into web video, an area the cable operator had a growing interest in as companies such as BuzzFeed, Refinery29, Vice and Maker Studios were getting a lot of attention. This included funding original shows made by some of these digital publishers and video stars.

Two years later, with small viewership and very little traction in the increasingly cluttered streaming landscape, Watchable is getting out of the original series business and might shut down its consumer streaming video platform altogether.

Watchable no longer plans to fund original content, according to three sources — including two companies that have sold original video series to Watchable and one company that had conversations with Watchable about producing a show for the platform. What’s more, contracts for Watchable’s original content team are set to expire at the end of next month, added one source. Comcast has not made a decision on whether the team will be let go or repositioned elsewhere within Comcast, said a source at the company. While it isn’t as big and didn’t spend as much money as Verizon’s Go90, Comcast’s original content team was responsible for nearly 30 exclusive short-form shows distributed on the platform over the past year.

“They are shutting down the originals part of Watchable,” said a Watchable content partner. “It sounds like, for now, it will remain as an ad-supported platform for the distribution partnerships they already have.”

Comcast confirmed that it’s pulling back from the over-the-top streaming app and original content aspects of the Watchable business, but cautioned that it has not made any final decisions on whether to shut down the app entirely and discontinue the Watchable brand. Instead, Comcast is focusing on finding other ways to distribute short-form digital video on its X1 set-top box and other distribution portals it developed. It also wants to use the streaming technology propping up Watchable for other aspects of the company’s business, which includes film and TV giants such as NBCUniversal and DreamWorks Animation.

“We are taking our learnings, among others, and shifting the strategy for Watchable to focus on integrating the content within our Xfinity TV platforms, notably X1 where we saw the greatest amount of engagement and organic discovery,” said Jamie Gillingham, VP of strategic development at Comcast, in a statement. “Also, we created new technologies for managing and consuming content for Watchable that we are now using in other parts of the business.”

Watchable’s decision to pull back from original content was inevitable, according to content partners. Since launching as an ad-supported video portal, Watchable has struggled to grow a sizable-enough audience that would warrant continued content investments. ...

EDIT: Also on MCN: »www.multichannel.com/new ··· t/415379

EDIT2: Karl also has a news item up about this now: »Comcast Poised to Axe 2-Year Old 'Watchable' Streaming Service [9] comments
