[Internet] Modem Lease increasing to $5.99Anyone else just get this email? I was paying $3.95... with this and the previously announced rate increase, that's $6 more I'll be paying next month. They're going to nickel and dime me to death. I guess it's really time to consider purchasing my own modem. |

I guess it's really time to consider purchasing my own modem. There are those here that will only say, don't worry, be happy ! You are exactly correct when you say nickel and diming us to death, except this time they are doing more than that. Last time I checked there were 60 dimes in 6 bucks or 120 nickels. They add up ! Right along with gas that has shot up in price by over $.20 a gallon and higher utility bills. Yes, by all means, buy a modem. A Motorola SB6141 is the hot set up. Good luck. |

No smartphone needed if you use Firefox User Agent Switcher...allows your PC to order from m.newegg.com, which is Newegg's mobile site, using Google Check Out to purchase. You must use coupon: WALLET. Save $15 on $50 or over purchase. |

Gotta love those low rating comments; » www.newegg.com/Product/P ··· FullInfoquote: Pros: None Cons: No speed increase over previous modem. Docsis 3.0 gave me nothing... Didn't need an upgrade, but talked myself into because with rebate it was a good price. Wish I didn't listen to myself. Ohhh, and have seen rebate either.
DOCSIS3.0 is not a speed increase, I should not listen to myself quote: Pros: NONE Cons: Coast too much, LED too bright and not reliable. Connection to the internet keep cutting off and the item does not connect back right the way. You have to wait at least 1 minute and 30 second before plugging it back to an outlet. Connect cut off when making browsing the internet
Coast too much? Apply more brakes. Funny my LEDs are very reliable... and bright. |

If you have a speed supported by docsis 2.0, get yourself a CISCO DPC2100R2 for cheap.
I got one used for ~$11, and it's been very trusty. There's no sense renting the modem. |

I bought my own Motorola SB5101U for $25 when TWC first stated this, so it's paid for as far as saving the modem rental fees.. But then , currently I'm only on Standard.
I can find the Sb6121 pretty easily locally, and the 6141 is available online. |

OMG. This is bullshit. I bought Motorola SB5101u for $20 bucks and it already paid off itself long time ago. I have no need for DOCSIS 3.0 modem since this modem is cheap and get me 30mbps down with powerboost and 18mbps down without powerboost. Im on Standard Internet. |

I got the same email so am now searching for a BYO cable modem. If you buy one that's NOT on their "official" list, it just means they won't help you set it up, right? but it would probably still work as long as everything else is compatible?
And what does DOCSIS 2 vs 3 really do for me? anything? I just have regular old Roadrunner with 10 or 15 or whatever it is down. Nothing fancy. Any reason for me to get a DOCSIS3 since they are twice the price?
Thanks!! |

I haven't gotten this yet, but usually through snail mails (never through my unused old (migrated Adelphia) RR e-mail address). I assume this will be for everywhere. Prices keep going up! |

I ordered the ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 from Amazon Saturday. What does the "Arris" mean, I assume it's the same modem, just white. It was $85 then, now $87... wish I'd seen that $60 price before I ordered! Got to be better than the 2100 I have and saving the $6/mo is a must! Just hope it doesn't take forever to get activated with all the phone calls they'll be getting with this rate increase! |

The Arris is the name is the company that recently bought Motorola's Home division. Other then the change in name, the 6141 ARRIS puts out is the same Moto would've put out if they still existed. You can expect Moto products to stick around for at least a year, being released under Arris before the name is phased out and you see ARRIS on anything that would've been Moto branded. |

Switched to Earthlink plan here in Venice, CA. $39.95/month, 15/2, no modem rental fee. Using same TWC-supplied SB6580 that I had before the plan change.
Not super fast, but working quite well on DOCSIS 3.0. Happy with the money saved. |

Be careful if you ever have a service call they will take away your SB6580 and give you a crappy DOCSIS 2.0 modem. This is why I bought my own SB6141 modem even with Earthlink. |

So what happens if you indeed buy yourself a modem, but you also have a [separate] modem for the phone ? That stays for free on TW's dime ? |

Bought my own SB6141 and called to have it activated last night. I also have TWC phone. The lady at tech support had no problem activating my new modem, but deactivated the old phone modem at the same time. I had feared that might happen, so I had called on my cell.
She was unable to get the phone modem back online, and ended up transferring me to level 3 support. The guy at L3 said, yeah, the coding is wrong. He fixed it and had me all set in about 2 minutes - most of which was waiting for the data to load on the phone modem.
I've now got 4 bonded channels instead of the one I had before. Speed is more consistent, seems to be hard limited at my 15 Mbps rate instead of bouncing around between 10-25 Mbps.
The clock seems to be set to GMT-6, although with daylight savings time I am now at GMT-5. They did a software update last night, watching to see if I experience any of the spontaneous reboots others have reported with this modem. |

OK. So if I get my parents a modem, what do I need to do to install it along side their existing modem ? They have TW phone service now. Is a splitter for the coax needed and then the modems co-exist peacefully ? |
· actions · 2013-Jul-30 3:23 pm · (locked) |
| |
Yes, a two way splitter and a couple of short sections of cable.
You will loose a bit over 3 db of signal power to the original modem. If you are currently marginal it *may* cause a problem. Otherwise, you are good to go. |
