Re: Ultra 101 upstream congestion already?

said by DAOWAce:

Still fighting for a node split. It's obvious the node is now so oversold again that all my issues due to congestion are coming back, as now the current amount of bonding channels are at their limit. Unless they upgrade to 12/4 or something, this won't go away, nor will any amount of troubleshooting do anything; like it never did anything 2+ years ago.

With the current generally available modems 12/4 is impossible since they are 8/4. There are modems coming soon that support more than 8 download channels. There is also DOCSIS 3.1 coming RSN .

As an alternative to 12/4 there is the option of not issuing the same 8 download channels to all the users on a node. If you have 12 download channels then issue different sets of them to different users. That way while each user has only 8 download channels, their channels are shared with only a subset of the other users on their node.

3-4 years down the road isn't exactly RSN.

I forgot to add a smiley to the RSN (I though the use of RSN as opposed to just Soon) implied that I was being funny. DOCSIS 3.1 capabilities are already being shipped so I think 2014-2015 is a more realistic time frame than 3-4 years. Remember that both the headend and customer equipment will be able to support both DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 so once the headend is DOCSIS 3.1 ready it can be rolled out gradually. Also, the ability to handle more than 8 D3.0 download and 4 D3.0 upload channels only needs the headend equipment to be upgraded along with newer modems. These modems are already in the pipeline. This is the same type of effort as CV replacing the older 4x4 modems with the current 8x4 ones.

End of 2014-2015 for CPE shipping at the earliest. Then you have to wait for CMTS that support DOCSIS 3.1. MSOs to do their testing and actually roll it out. That'll be at least 1.5 to 2 years after that. I'm not saying having 3.1 CPE in the field isn't useful. But having 3.1 CPE alone won't result in any improvement. So its still quite a ways away.
