Re: Centurylink Gigabit

Is this one of those "if you're within 300 feet of one of our existing switches, you can have a 1gb connection as long as you provide the ethernet cable" kind of deals?

We were just converted over a couple of days ago. A portion of west Omaha had cable tv and cable internet provided by CL and its predecessors since the late 1990's (yes, coax cable, not copper pair). It was a test market for US West to get their feet wet in the tv business.

They trenched fiber into the neighborhoods in around 1997-98, then coax from the peds to the homes. Over the last few months, they have come around and trenched fiber from the peds to the homes that already had CL service of some sort (POTS, TV, internet) and installed ONT's.

Thursday they installed a new "gateway", a whole house DVR and set top boxes on each TV, removed the old cable modem and moved us onto the fiber.

We're currently on their 40x5 plan, which is what they automatically converted everyone over to, along with Prism TV, for the same prices we've been paying.

Currently there is a TV cap of only 4 live streams coming into the house, they say that will be upped to 6 in a few months. We have been able to have 4 different streams going on the TV's, plus still get the 40 x 5 on the internet speed tests.

My understanding from the installer is that in the areas like mine where there is fiber to the neighborhood, gig internet speeds are available. Other areas of town will eventually be overbuilt with fiber, but that's a years long process.

They did get their TV franchised for the entire city now, so they are offering Prism in all areas of town, but outside the fiber areas it will be VDSL2, and internet speeds will of course be lower.

Nope in some portions of Omaha they've had fiber established for a bit (true to goodness FFTP like Verizon) however if I'm not mistaken the max was around 40/20 I think. They plan to upgrade their existing fiber footprint in Omaha to support 1 Gbps up and down. Much like google (dunno if they're using the same tech couldn't find details) however I highly doubt for the same pricing.

Upon announcement, pricing was planned to be $79.95 when bundled and $149.95 alone. No word that the pricing has changed. Not Google pricing, but certainly not bad for 1Gbps.

Wow, that's not bad at all, especially considering current legacy ADSL pricing. I'd sign up in a heart beat if it was available here. Hopefully once people start to sign up we can hear the details of the tech behind it.

That's really not bad, i'd gladly pay that for 1Gbps, and even give them my TV business to boot, although I do really like Dish Network.
