They do have some very nice (and pricey) hardtails and FS available.

As for bottom line components, XT is far too expensive and relatively high end for the entry level rider. Frankly with 2014 Shimano drive trains, Deore is just fine (there's even a Plus version with the clutched rear derailleur this year). The main advantage SLX, XT, and XTR has over cheaper lines is mainly weight saving plus some goodies like finned brakes, nicer rotors and (more importantly for some cyclists) more bling. Functionally there is some differences like slightly crisper shifting, but not something many riders notice. However, I wouldn't suggest going below Deore as from there stuff gets into the department store bike components.

It's just way too easy to steal it if someone is determined, unfortunately. While you don't need to spend $1000, you do need to get something more than a big box store.

Also, for regular commute use, consider carefully the weight of the bike. Tire size is another consideration, too small and they can puncture too easily, too large and they add a lot or resistance. My buddy had a nice bicycle with thin tires and he was constantly puncturing them on road debris (broken glass, sharp items, etc.).

Good luck!

Don't forget the best lock you can get, if you are going to have to lock it up somewhere.
--
"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." - Jim Elliott

dirtyjeffer0 posted : if you need a bike now, Costco also has some, which i think are even Canadian made...i'm not sure what the selection is like this late in the season, but worth a peak if you have a membership...i thought the bikes looked pretty decent and were well priced...i think $300 gets you a really nice bike there.

dirtyjeffer0 posted : if you aren't in a hurry to get a bike, wait until the next Police Auction...you can likely get a $500 bike for $100 or less (of course, depending on who is there to bid on it)...my buddy owns an auction business and they get most of the police auction contracts...the London Police auction often has hundreds of bikes available for sale ranging from cheap garbage to some really high end stuff...the reason why bikes are rarely claimed is the good stuff is often claimed through insurance (so already replaced) and sometimes the stolen items are recovered long after the actual theft (perhaps 2 years later, but they don't know who owns the bike originally and the owner has long since given up looking for it).

--
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

- George Orwell
