Your previous bill didn't say it? Mine (paper bill) did for cable services, but not the modem fee increase until this month's paper statement (never was told in advanced).

Last bill came with two printed pages (pay $10 more for 20/?, and "Save $10 with intelligentHome"). The bill page just states the old payment and the new amount - no mention of why the price was hiked.

Prior month's bill came with 1 extra advert black&white printed offer - $64 for turbo & basic cable. Back of page is an advert for TWC's Visa credit card. Ah, here it is, on the main bill under the heading "Enjoy TWC Better"... by paying more? Their logic is backwards to what customers imagine when it come it enjoyment. No wonder I missed that blurb, it's not like they put in big red letters that the following month my rate would be $5 higher (minus a penny). So, why exactly did internet rates get hiked?

I guess it's because of the rental modem increase fee, now $6 for everyone, and also the standard price for all internet tiers raised about a few bucks as well. But I can't tell your situation, I don't know how your TWC bill works out.

That is why I use my own modem... to avoid paying the rental charge.

I don't pay the modem rental fee either, nor do I have tv. Just standard 15/1 internet. I am guessing that the rate hike is due to the spat TWC had with CBS, but I don't see why that should result in an internet fee hike.

dmhowell - if you read business news, the TWCable CEO said at last year's board & major shareholder meeting that (and I'm paraphrasing here) if our competitors can charge such fees (Comcast charges $7/mo) so should we - and increase our profits by another few hundred million dollars per year. they were under pressure to find new revenue because they keep losing around a million CableTV annually to cord cutting - so basically ISP customers are subsidizing CableTV customers through that modem fee.

as for why YOUI don't pay that fee - either a modem was purchased on your behalf long ago and you don't even realize it, or your building has negotiated some special right of way deal with TWCable that included equipment.

I would hope so. The purpose of a business is not to "care" about customers, but rather to make money, pure and simple. If "caring" about customers makes money, they'll certainly do it.

How, exactly, do you expect a business to make money if they alienate (or otherwise piss off) their customers so that they take their business elsewhere? It is in a company's best interest to keep their customers happy (i.e. "care") so that they stay customers.

...or be a monopoly in the customer's area so that there is no place else to go.

jp you hit the nail on the head - without any real competition in each local market, these cable companies only need care about shareholders, while they pay lawyers to find legal loopholes, and politician to ignore their constituents, all while milking their subscribers dry. the irony is the breakup of the baby bell former AT&T companies three decades ago was supposed to open up the field to competition... go figure.

$40 a month for the basic internet package. Current speed is:

I know that seems expensive, but switching to a standard package doubles that cost. Standard internet is around $85 a month here.

According to TWC's site, the 15/1 package is $35/m for 12 months in that area. Not sure how that's more expensive.

I called into the local office to set up service. They told me prices in the region are different from what is listed on the website. I told them that I thought that was a bait and switch thing, but they told me that everyone who calls in gets redirected to the local call center and informed of the REAL price. Also, that $35/m price is for being under a contract and for new subscribers only. Since I had service with them at one point, I was not considered to be a new subscriber, so I was ineligible for any of the promotions. My price of $40 includes all the taxes, fees and modem rental, and no contract. I will be buying a modem once I get a job again. Since TWC has NO direct competition here, they can charge what ever they want, and do so.

There isn't alot of competition going on in my area either. Only AT&T or TWC. And AT&T only provides up to 1.5mbit/s at my house according to their website, but I think it can be higher, maybe 3 or 6mbit/s. But speeds are still too slow for competing TWC. The reason why I switched from AT&T to TWC is their ridiculous prices, not internet problems, charging me $29.99 for 1.5mbit/s. Back then I was a young and didn't care much, now I realize AT&T is ripping me off a year before, and made the switch to TWC. But I still wish AT&T had Uverse in my area, not because of the idea of switching back, its because of competition. I am just afraid someday TWC will charge me like hell, right now I am paying $37 per month for standard internet for 1 year, who knows what TWC will make me pay more next year...

I would have ordered online... [which I did.] If I called the local office, it would have been higher. BTW, I did get the the 15 Meg for $34.99 / month in Milwaukee...

Modem rental would be $6 per month, but I own mine...

$96 including tax (but not modem rental; I own a SB6141) for 50/5, which tests out to around 55/5.5.

Frustratingly expensive, but I don't have any other options with anywhere close to the upload speed...well, none without a low cap.

As I said above, that is a price for NEW SUBSCRIBERS ONLY. I was previously a subscriber in the area, and as such, I am not eligible for ANY promotions. Once they get you in, they no longer care about trying to keep you happy. They know they have us over a barrel, as there is NO one we can switch to. I got a letter in the mail today informing me of an upcoming price increase of $5 a month, which will bring me up to $45 a month. Price keeps going up, and they know we will stay with them because we have no one to switch to.

As I mentioned in my previous post -- I got the $34.99 price for my second consecutive year of service. So it's at least possible around Milwaukee. I'm sure it's no coincidence that we're also served by AT&T U-Verse. You are probably right that if there are no comparable options, as seems to be the case in Pleasant Prairie, they won't offer any deals.

Little bump I checked my gfs bill today when we went to queens center mall ,NY I asked them to price match fios 50/25 and they did. 34.99+30 for Ultimate.

What they also did was put a 7$ Value credit. So the bill is 57.99 I have never seen a valued customer credit.

Anyone else?

i believe 30/5-50/5 plans now get their docsis3 modem from twc, so basically they charge you the modem lease fee, then credit it back to you as a valued customer credit. so FiOS charges $65 in Queens for 50mbps - good to know - my area is not lit up yet.

I just got a price increase to $49.99 in NC. I have "normal" service 15Mbps , actual download speed around 1.8 MB/s. It was 38.95 for the last year, and 20-something for the 1st year. I didn't like the corporate arrogance and the bullshit they wrote in the letter...

If I switch to AT&T, that would be DSL. Will my IP phone still work and could I still watch flash video online?
