Well, not a question, but this was my project on Friday evening. A friend of mine had this Troy Bilt 18.5 HP riding mower for 10 years and it threw a rod. Busted the outside casing when it did so he was going to junk it and just buy a new one. I went and picked it up, stripped the engine off, and cleaned everything up.
In searching for a new Briggs motor, I found the exact model but higher HP at Northern for $580 online. I called Briggs about being sure that the higher HP engine would replace the original and I was told that they were NOT allowed to give out that info and that I would have to call a local dealer. So I did and they said no problem as long as the shaft size and bolt hole size in the shaft were the same. They were so I called Northern.
They told me they showed one in stock and that it was probably the floor model. They gave me a price of $198 for the engine which was way less than the advertised $580 on the web site and I mentioned that. The sales person I spoke with assured me the $198 was correct and I told him if he had it, I would take the floor model. Unfortunately they could not locate it so I was told one could be ordered out of the warehouse and be here in 7 to 14 days and would be the same $198 price tag. So I jumped on it.
Picked up the engine on Friday afternoon and so my rebuild commenced Friday evening.
