CenturyLink → Getting my Zyxel Q1000Z working on Centurylink

I was on Centurylinks website and seen the Zyxel Q100Z. I had heard others talk highly of this dsl router. So I got one off of Ebay....but its a Qwest. Can I change the setting in this modem to work with Centurylink? Customer support at Centurylink is telling me it won't work and that they only offer two modems that work in my area. Are they just trying to get me to buy one of their modems? or is this for real?

Century Link is Qwest, it just has the older name on it still. The only thing you should have to do is put in your DSL username and password to make it work, assuming it's the right kind to work with the type of service you have. Do you know if you have ADSL, ADSL2 or VDSL2? Also you should update the modem to the latest firmware then do a factory reset to clear it and start fresh.

I'm not sure what service I have. I am leasing one right now to get me up and running. But the leased one had me enter a code from the bottom of the router before I could use the internet. I didn't have to enter a username or password.

They programmed your username and password for you remotely. You will need to know that to put into a new modem though. Check the modem's status page on it's webserver and you can find the type of service under WAN Status. Mine is set for PPPoE and VDSL2. Check the specs of any modem you want to buy to see if it supports the service you are using. They commonly use ADSL for slower speed areas of 1.5-7mb and VDSL2 for faster speeds of 20 to 40mb. The Actiontec Q1000 can handle either one and it looks like the Zyxel Q1000Z can too if you can believe the descriptions on ebay.

It's possible your are DHCP and don't need a un/pw. I assume the code you had to enter was the MAC address.

You need to find out if your existing service is ADSL or VDSL.
You need to find out if you are in a PPPoE or DHCP area.

What modem did CL provide when your service was setup?
What speed package are your paying for?
Are you in a former Embarq, CenturyTel, or Qwest area?

The replacement modem needs to be configured similar to the existing modem.
Look at the Status pages in the original modem and you should find what you need to configure the other one (all but the PPPoE password, if needed).

It has to be ADSL because the best advertised speed I could get was 10mb/768. The Actiontec Q1000 is the one they are leasing me at the moment until I can get my Zyxel Q1000Z working on their network. I am using Centurylink, but when I run speed test is says embarq.

if the Actiontec Q1000 is working, then the XyXel will work as well.

On your Actiontec, Look in your "WAN settings" under the "Advanced" tab, see if it says "PPoE" or "IPoE", that will tell you what kind of network your on, and you can copy the settings from there.

If it's "PPoE", you'll have to write down the username, then call or chat with tech support to get the password. Once you have both of those, just enter the settings on the Q1000z in the same spot, and it'll work.
