[CFL] Vacation suspend for DVR record settings

Please give us the ability to 'suspend' or put-on-hold the recordings we have programmed in our DVR so that, when we go on vacation, the DVR does not fill up.

Currently, we have to delete the programs and re-enter them when we return--a major PITA.

I'm confused. Wouldn't you want your DVR to record the programs when you are on vacation so that you can watch them when you get home? Isn't that the point of the DVR to record programs that you would normally miss? I am confused as to what purpose this feature would serve. You could always unplug your box while you're away!

wouldn't just going in and changing the DVR settings when you are on vacation using a mobile device work for you? The BHN app should be like the TWC I would assume in how it works with Navigator for Remote DVR?

No, I don't want it to record everything while gone--will fill up the DVR and there will be far more recorded than I will ever want to watch....hundreds of hours of recorded shows?!! There are a few weekly shows I would not suspend, but the record-every-day ones for sure I would like to suspend.

Unplugging the box causes it to lose authorization and is a PITA+delay to get restarted on return. Further, the DVR in an entertainment cabinet and reaching the plug (especially to put it back in) can be a 30 minute job due to accessibility and zero visibility.

You wouldn't have to use it unless you wanted to. The suspend feature would not affect you at all if you did not want to use it.

Oh, another use is this: I have several that I would like to suspend when the show turns into re-runs. I know you can mark them to record NEW only; that almost NEVER works.

Changing them to what? I don't have a BHN DVR app on my phone anyway, but if the software does not have a suspend option in it, I cannot invoke that just because I am changing via an app rather than at home!

I am really surprised at the blowback I am getting on such a simple request. Just because YOU don't need it doesn't mean it is not useful for others. We take long trips, and I HATE having to reënter all of my recording settings on return.

Calm down. I was just asking as to what purpose this would serve as I didn't understand how it would be useful...Since the DVR is a tool to record shows when you miss them I didn't understand the usefulness of a having a 'suspend' feature when you could delete the show off if you didn't want it to record.

I think I can kind of see what you are looking for, as you want it to stop some shows but not... I for one have not had trouble as I usually only record 'new shows' and it 95% of the time doesn't record any of the reruns.

For tracking purposes (for me) can you copy this here »If you could add a product, feature or make a change...

Otherwise this will get lost in the halls of tech and I don't want that.

Um how long are your vacations? If like normal people unplugging it will not cause it to lose authorization and lets assume for a second that it happens...it's an easy and instant fix.

We travel a lot, and at least once a year, it is for over a month.

On the lost authorization, how is it quick? I haven't had it happen in a long time, but it involved calling a number and having it done remotely.

A month is right on the border just depends on when you last received entitlement msgs. Either way the IVR makes short business of that with a simple phone call worst case reach out to me and I can do it in seconds.

I actually know what the OP is talking about. When I go on vacations for more than seven days, I just go through my series manager, and on a pad of paper, write down the daily recorded shows, and delete the series from the DVR, so only my weekly shows record. When I return, I then manually add back those shows. A little bit of a p.i.t.a., but nothing too time consuming. However, some clever suspend mode the OP is suggesting would be nice, but it would be impossible for the DVR to determine what is exactly a "daily" show versus a "weekly" show... Unless the option was a per-item option in the Series Manager... each item under the options menu when selected might have a "suspend recordings" options...?

I haven't gone into the possible mechanics of it, but yes, I was thinking it would be a "per item" suspend function--although, if that were too complicated to implement, a single "suspend-all" would be better than nothing.

Writing them down is a familiar process, but adding them back in is still a chore as you have to find each one in the guide, and go throughout the set up selections for every one individually. No, it doesn't end the world to do it, but it could be avoided. I mean, after all, most of the technology we have in our lives is conveneience--not essential for life This would be just one more--technology making things easier for us.

In all fairness JC in several years of working with customers and this product I have never had this request so while I will certainly submit it no holding breath because I don't want you turning blue.

I understand. But nobody asked Volta for electricity before he created it with an 'electric pile' either! In other words, when you don't have something, it is not always obvious you don't have it--and thus don't ask for it. Also, not everybody "needs" it; that doesn't mean it is not highly useful for those who do.

I think your suggestion is a good idea. By chance have you tried editing the series recordings to only keep the last 1-3 recordings or whatever number you find useful to you? I record a daily news program that if I don't get to it by that night it's already "old news" so this feature helps me by deleting the recordings for me. This would also be easier than deleting the series recordings, you could just change it to one and when you get back from vacation you could switch it to never delete a recording.

Good point, there are some daily recordings that I would want to hang onto no matter how long I am on vaca for, and others not so much. A per-item setting would be cool.

These last couple of posts show a way for this to be EASY.

Just allow us to set number to be saved to ZERO. Done.
