[Other] Charter so close I can hear the high speed

Been trying to get charter in my neighborhood for four years. I have done everything to get them here. Site survey calls neighbor calls. Nothing. The closet tap is .5 miles away and for 50 k they will hook me up. I'm at wits end and really don't want to go to hughesnet. I currently have centurylink DSL at 512k. Yes that's a k.

Any ideas. Help

Keep bugging charter unless you are willing to pay 50k.

Otherwise stick with your slow DSL, it'll be better than hughesnet. And you probably don't have caps currently, you will with hughesnet.

Option 1: Move where Charter is already serviceable
Option 2: Keep the CenturyLink DSL line
Option 3: Get a T-1 connection from CenturyLink (expensive but much less then 50k) or another telco in the area
Option 4: Switch to mobile broadband or satellite internet, although either one will have bandwidth caps much lower then the other options above.

or you could go find out when the cable contract is up and bug the local cable committee or whomever handles the contract renewals and bug them about it.

Yeah I will keep bugging charter. And century link. Bandwidth caps are not good

Option 1 yeah not likely. I would rather run a line myself the .6 miles away
Option 3. Tried that nothing but excuses from centurylink
Option 4. Broadband mobile is my backup now.

Getting neighbors to call in to charter. Maybe I can put up a wireless tower in the charter area

Yeah weekly calls might work better

Can you see any homes served by Charter? If so you could attempt to get a connection elsewhere and use wireless bridges to get it to your house.

For the $50k do you own the line and then can charge neighbors if they want to tap in ..... ??

DSL is waaay better than satellite. your dsl prob doesnt go out when it rains or have stricter restrictions like satellite

Charter prob wont spend the 50K unless they have some kind of assurance they'll earn that 50K + more over a few years. Maybe talk to their corporate office about a long term contract where you agree to pay x amount for x years for their service

No on close enough to do that unless I put up a tower.

I wish. I asked them the same thing. They said nope. Which I said was dumb. Just pay me back the 50 k when the rest of the development gets signed up till then I collect on every hook up

I like the corporate angle. My buddy at charter said they could do this for less than 10 k and light up the development. Thanks for the idea

I can hear the speed also.

Here is a map that I created (click image to enlarge).

The green area is where slow DSL is available.

The pink area is where charter is available.

The red circle is where I live.

I suppose I can't do much besides ask them if they have any plans to install down the road in a few years.

Doesn't look like there's many prospective subscribers in your immediate area. Chances of expansion are almost non-existant unless more development occurs.

@jerryma5:

UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO MOVE TO THAT CHARTER SERVED AREA.......

There is really nothing you can do except pay 50,000$ if you really want
Charter service. It seems you can't afford to do that.

Keep your DSL and stop thinking about it.

What I would do in this situation is this.

Obtain the use of a small area of property with electricity available within the charter service area nearest to you.

Order charter internet service at that property.

Erect a 50 foot guyd pole at this property with the following radio on it.

»www.newegg.com/Product/P ··· -WA7510N

»www.tp-link.us/products/ ··· -WA7510N

Do the same at home and aim them at each other.

That radio can do multiple kilometers point to point aimed at each other, so half a mile is nothing. I've done 15 miles with Motorola 5.7ghz equipment and a directional mesh reflector.

You should be able to get this done for under $500, hella cheaper than $50K.
