Re: [none] Rate Increase E-Mail

Thanks, I will give DSL extreme a try. I am not sure the Verizon Regional package is offered here.

In addition to resellers may want to see if there is a local CLEC that services your area. Competitive Local Exchange Carriers rent Telco copper loop but everything else is provided by the CLEC. I switched landline and DSL about a year ago here in NH and have been pleased with the change.

As always it really depends on the quality of the CLEC.

I see Verizon offering/advertising 4 different Double Play Phone/DSL bundles:

High Speed Internet and Regional Essentials...$34.99 (plus taxes and fees)
High Speed Internet and Freedom Essentials...$44.99 (plus taxes and fees)
High Speed Internet Enhanced and Regional Essentials...$44.99 (plus taxes and fees)
High Speed Internet Enhanced and Freedom Essentials...$54.99 (plus taxes and fees)

High Speed Internet is 0.5 to 1 Mbps
High Speed Internet Enhanced is 1.1 to 15 Mbps
Regional Essentials includes unlimited local and regional calling plus Voice Mail, Caller ID and Call Waiting
Freedom Essentials includes unlimited local, regional & nationwide long distance calling plus Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, 3-Way Calling and Home Voice Mail

I think that Verizon's definition of "High Speed Internet" is a holdover from when DSL first came out and it was being compared to 56K dialup which was very prevalent and the norm at the time. Verizon is living in the past by still using that terminology in 2013!

To put things in perspective I've had DSL with Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic) since 2000 and the fastest DSL download speed at that time was only 640K. My download speed rates then increased in increments over the years to 768K, 1.5M, 3.0M and lastly to 7.1M which is where I am at today. At this point I don't think I will ever see any faster speeds on my copper DSL.

It was not that long ago when we would jumpe on the next dial-up modem, new modem needed, for better speed. I have the history of dial-up in my equipment closet. I always went with the hardware accelerate ones; way more money but I needed all the memory and cpu for other things.
quote:
Connection Bitrate
Modem 110 0.1 kbit/s
Modem 300 (Bell 103 or V.21) 0.3 kbit/s
Modem 1200 (Bell 212A or V.22) 1.2 kbit/s
Modem 2400 (V.22bis) 2.4 kbit/s
Modem 2400 (V.26bis) 2.4 kbit/s
Modem 4800 (V.27ter) 4.8 kbit/s
Modem 9600 (V.32) 9.6 kbit/s
Modem 14.4 (V.32bis) 14.4 kbit/s
Modem 28.8 (V.34) 28.8 kbit/s
Modem 33.6 (V.34) 33.6 kbit/s
Modem 56k (V.90) 56.0/33.6 kbit/s
Modem 56k (V.92) 56.0/48.0 kbit/s

AOL added 200,000 dial-up customers in 2011.
So all of this B.S. that 1/1 Gig is a must is just. So yes even the slowest DSL is "high speed". It is used like unlimited or when a C.A.T.V. says they have a "fiber" network.

I am in there with you. The best dialup I could do was 26.4 due to line conditions. Boy was I in heaven when I got ISDN BRI at 128 kbit/s in 2004
