iMessage doing whatever it wants?

Hello all,

I have iMessage configured on my iPhone5 with my # and my @me.com, I have it set up that it will use my # as my main iMessage method. I also configured iMessage on my MBP to also use my # as my main conversation starter.

The issue that's happening is, a lot of my iMessage friends are receiving my SMS from the @me.com, is there any reason why is this happening ?

thx

MVM,

Try closing the existing conversations on the iPhone and starting new ones. Are you running the latest iOS 7 and also Mavericks on your computer?

Also, when you say "SMS" - are they actually receiving green SMS messages with a return address set as your email address? If so, try disabling the option to fall back to SMS when iMessage is not available.

1 MBP running 10.8.5 haven't updated to 10.9 yet prob will in a few days, updated my older MBP first to see if I saw any issues with the user experience but i only have iChat/iMessage on my main MBP that runs 10.8.5

Yeah I have closed all conversations on iPhone & iChat. Sorry when I meant SMS was actually imessage as @me.com only works via iMessage mode.

Unless you have non-standard applications, you should upgrade sooner rather than later. Compatibility between ML/Mavericks is pretty close, but iMessage is improved with every OS X update.

When the new conversation started, did you initiate it or did the other party? If they're sending it to your @me.com address, your iPhone/Mac will start using that as the return address as well.

As for the @me.com over SMS - it's actually possible to receive a SMS from an email address. I saw it rarely with early versions of iMessage, but I don't think it happens anymore.

Also, just curious - why does it matter that it shows up from the @me.com address? If the receiver's contacts are set properly, they shouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Unless the other party has every iMessage related email address and phone number from a given person, it can be hard to correlate a message from a new sender to an existing contact.

I have an old iPhone 4 that I mostly use while abroad because it's unlocked and not worth much to me in case of theft. I was testing t-mobile's network and so had two active iMessage phone numbers.

At one point, the iPhone 4 ignored my iMessage settings to appear to be sending from my main number and instead started sending from my new number. The conversation happened to be a group conversation, and most people ignored me until one person asked if it was me. They didn't recognize the number it was coming from, and iMessage didn't automatically group it with my previous messages to them (though it should, really, and do it automatically, even if my friends don't know that second #)

After that happened, it was a mess to keep people from sending iMessages to that number. At the time, that second number wasn't appearing on all of my devices, so iMessages would go to some but not all devices. I ended up logging out and in to iMessage on every device, and then making absolutely sure each device was configured with the same numbers and emails, and was all sending iMessages from the same number.

Point being: iMessage just "did want it wanted" to me once. And it's a big headache.
