Just imagine what this country could do if that 82% were going to science and education! |

Well, I guess I can be thankful that all that cash isn't going to the Church. Oh wait....

I noticed most operations funding are cut but administration got several percentage increases. Enlisted pay +2% Officer Pay 8%. I see where their priorities are. You could balance the budget if we cleaned out the Defense waste, fraud and stupidity. |

Just for clarification: D&T's excellent chart is about our $1.16 Trillion of discretionary spending. It does not reflect the $2.62 Trillion of mandatory spending which goes to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
I've never been clear why they exclude that. Nevertheless, I've long felt the chart should hang on every public school wall in America. |

We could be reading textbooks while China nukes us into oblivion. (Not saying we need to use all that money yet we do need to use some for defense) |

Just imagine what the country could do if the money was not spent by the government at all, but returned to the taxpayers, who in turn could make their own decision on how best to use it. |

I doubt most of the population of this country would survive if we entrusted the whole thing to the private sector. Only the richest neighborhoods would even have paved roads(the normal burbs would be called unprofitable just like how many areas still cannot do better than 3mbit DSL) |

Social Security is self funded. The reason its in its mess is because the US Goverment borrowed from the fund for the DoD. |

We are hated for our freedoms, or what little we'll have left after Hussein Obama is done with us. We need to drastically increase military spending, and cut helping the helpless. Get rid of food stamps, Medicaid and all of that other nonsense, take that money and put it toward building a national defense system stronger then what we have. Also take the scumbags in the welfare system now, and throw their asses in the Military so they can pay back their debt to society. |

Invaded by whom? Those trerrorists on mules armed with US provided weapons from the 80s?
This country does not need the strongest most technology advanced military. The MIC is what is killing our country. The people in the military are the ones sucking the goverment tit. Screw the troops. |

said by Kearnstd:Just imagine what this country could do if that 82% were going to science and education! Agreed. A strong military is pointless when all they are defending is moronic beer-guzzling NASCAR fans or single digit IQ Kardashian/Amerikan Idle/Honey Boo Boo worshipers. The Defense budget should be cut to 1/10th its current expenditures and the other 90% used to build the country back to what it was. There are so many repetitive departments in defense it boggles the mind; when you get THAT much money, you have to find ways to spend it all and ask for more next year. Defense contractors are great at that... it gets them rich. Instead spend the money on education, infrastructure, scientific R&D (alternate energy comes to mind). No one wants to invade the garbage dump! |

Invaded by what country? as long as we keep the ICBMs funded nobody would invade. Hell we could half the military budget and still be spending more than the rest of the world combined.
The fact that right now our country depends on Russia to put people into space is just dumb. |

If the troops have been thrown into the job market all the sudden the same people who have been living off military benefits are now on Medicare and food stamps as well. Would you rather have people sitting at home doing nothing and receiving benefits or people working and receiving benefits? Are you saying that the defense budget is really just a giant welfare pool? If so what benefit does it do by cutting from one when it will just add to another? What exactly in the defense budget will you cut? |

The funny part is that when the money is re-tasked for infrastructure development, there is plenty of work for the former soldiers (and more); they won't be sitting home doing nothing. And when you cut the defense contractor executives & shareholders out of the loop (and their significant siphoning of funding) and put that money back into the system, you would be surprised how much money there really is.
Are you making an argument that we should keep military spending high just because soldiers would otherwise be unemployed? |

Obamacare "You can keep your coverage" Obamacare "You can keep your doctor" Obamacare "Sign the law before you know whats in it."
I doubt it'll be around much longer with all the fighting lies and corruption used to pass it through a lame duck session.
If Steve needs help then respond with arguments and evidence to debunk his views. I have a feeling he won't get it from ACA. |

If that means, in your view, that some suburbs won't have "free" roadways, I'm fine with that. Roads don't require public financing. I see no need to subsidize my neighbors life choices, whether I'm in the city or the suburbs. |

Social Security may be "self-funded", but it is not sustainable, given actuarial reality. It isn't a question of if, just when, SS fails. |

Yes, the defense budget is a giant welfare pool to the Mics. I would cut overseas operations, close every base outside the US. Cut down to two carriers, and just a few subs. Cut the military size by 50%. |

Raise the SS Tax on Income over 140k and you solved the Social Security Problem. |

After you do that and all the extra money goes into paying off the deficit what will the next step be for all those people and the country? |

Good luck with that; it might postpone insolvency by a year, or it might actually accelerate it.
When the 140K+ crowd does the math and decides that another 12 points of tax just isn't worth it, and decide to "work" less, what do you think the result will be? |

Currently the 118k and over crowd pay less taxes than everyone below that line. Maybe its time we even it. Why should someone making 50k pay higher taxes than the guy making 140k? |

The 118K+ crowd certainly does not pay "less taxes than everyone below that line".
Social Security is not means-tested - that's by-design, so it enjoys support from virtually everyone (except fiscal realists) - it is a universal benefit program.
The benefit, however, is capped; those earning over 118K aren't going to enjoy any proportional increase in their check, so why then, must they continue to pay the tax on those additional earnings? |

Do you know how much people making over 140k are already paying towards social security? Once upon a time when people retired (which wasn't until they were physically unable to work versus the "I'm 55. Time to really start living.") they simply lived with their children and shared expenses. They didn't need a fat government check. Today everyone has become addicted to the giant government teat. |
