The sales people on the other end have at their fingertips the ability to tell you exactly what you can and can not get and thats what they should tell the customer. To tell me the "potential" of what I can get is OUTRAGEOUS! Fact is these people know full well that if they are sigining up a new person and its in the old Bell Altlantic Area and its not Covad they are capped. Them saying anything else is an outright lie. I do wonder what the attorney General of the State of New York would think about it also.

As of January 22, 2001, Verizon began selling their ISP's new service. Basic DSL service is now 768/128 vs. 640/90.

Whether Earthlink takes advantage of this new deal is entirely up to them. I have to admit, I truely belive all DSL companies are scam artists. I was all psyched about moving to earthlink because they claim I'd get 1500/128... then, the next day they said "well, that's the max speed... we only guarantee a minimum speed." When I asked what that was, I was told "640/90". Scammers. I'm SO wishing OptimumOnline was available in WhitePlains. I've been told Verizon has plans for new ports to come online Feb 27th and that I should call back around then to re-submit the order. This whole thing tought me a few interesting lessons. One of them is that The sales guy will say anything and thats why I distrusted his words from the start. I also learned that in many instances the people working there do not know the details of the stuff they are selling at all. They also return phone calls only 1 out of every 8-10 messages.

So the story is that there is no "True" cap raising going on but alot of half-truths being told by there sales people.

The moral of this whole thing is that for new customers, continue to go with a Covad install whenever you can and dont let them talk you out of it if you can.

I'd say as a blanket statement this is true, they probably won't be just upping the cap for all the 640k users. However, those who have ordered recently should consider checking in with Mr. Earthlink to see what's up. As I stated above, I got a relatively positive response when I called. I had a legitimate complaint, since I was actually told that I would be getting the higher cap, but didn't. Someone said the effective date was in late November, and I ordered right around that time... I think if you push hard enough you might be able to get them to up your cap without reprovisioning. And in my case, they WILL be upping it, lest they be deluged with hourly phone calls. I know some other people were told 1500 but got 640, and I encourage those people to give Earthlink hell.

Things are looking like I'll get it upgraded, he said it's a rather simple DSLAM configuration as I pretty much knew already. The only potential is for someone to try to challenge whether my order was before or after they started promising it, but I was definitely told that my area had just gone to 1500 cap. I'll post further updates here for those who would be interested in fighting their own battles.

I know they wouldn't be paying the same price as end-users, but I would find it hard to believe that they would cut a deal for less than $39.95 for the Professional before they were planning on doing it for all customers (resellers normally pay more than $39.95 for just access to the Professional service lines, although it would appear that this is changing, although they are probably redefining basic service).

Who knows what they are planning on doing in relation to Professional package users, it could be they are planning on changing those customers soon, but considering how quiet it has been so far, and Verizon acts in mysterious ways.

He *is* indeed receiving the professional package. The 1.6M is simply a label VZ is using, as I believe no one on that package is actually capped at 1.6M but config'd @ 1.5M, much the same way their 640 package is actually only capped at 608. (Its really false advertising. I would like to see a screen capture from someone with a Speedstream on VZ's prof pkg, which I am confident would prove my point. The real world speeds of VZ's "Professional Package" are ~1280/80. I know, I have it.

..And I do think what VZ is doing is terribly wrong, or at least the timing is completely miscalculated, as they shouldve upgraded their own 1.6 customers to a higher level first, and up'd their 640 cust's to 1.6, BEFORE rolling out this kind of deal with EL/MS.

You are acually using Verizons 1.6M service (their professional user package I believe its called here in the East Coast) for $39, whilst VZ's own customers pay $99 for the same.

Covad has changed their setup as of Dec. 1, 2000. They no longer run separate lines to your home. They only line share on ADSL now and only connect new accounts in CO's equipped to line share. They are beginning to use self-install kits too. For many new customers the only contact they have in their setup with Covad is an email from Covad. There is no way it is 1500 up and down, ADSL isn't capable of that (and I know Verizon uses ADSL for their systems). ADSL maxes out a 1000 up.
