zodden posted : I feel your pain bro. I went through a customer service hell with EA a few weeks back. My main problem with them is that they sell you the "potential" of reaching 1500 when in fact your true potential is 640 because of a cap on the line. That is out and out dishonesty and is borderline legal in my opinion. For example when I go and buy a computer the sales guy can not tell me that I am getting a 1GZ machine and then when I find out I really have a 700mhz machine he can not say that my machine has the "potential" of reaching 1GZ and I am only limited by a 700mhz CPU that caps the speed at 700. I am sure if I sat down to think about it I could come up with a thousand examples where this could be conrtrued as quasi-legal at best.

The sales people on the other end have at their fingertips the ability to tell you exactly what you can and can not get and thats what they should tell the customer. To tell me the "potential" of what I can get is OUTRAGEOUS! Fact is these people know full well that if they are sigining up a new person and its in the old Bell Altlantic Area and its not Covad they are capped. Them saying anything else is an outright lie. I do wonder what the attorney General of the State of New York would think about it also.

zodden posted : That could mean that Covad wants to (as I have been reading elsewhere) go into direct business with the customers instead of being a go-between. That would make them a competitor of EA and Verizon in consumer DSL in this area. That would be fine with me. IF they keep their current d/l caps intact I will just cancel Earthlink and sign up with them. Of course the people on the phone you spoke to could be misinformed or lying which is the most likely scenerio when dealing with EA reps on the phone.

zodden posted : Here is a little update from my end. Since I got connected for the fist time a few days ago my speed has been 502/83 tweaked and thats it. After speaking on the phone alot with EA reps since early Fri what I gather is that my cap is still 640, and that its "possible" that Verizon will be raising the cap to 1500 in the future but that has not happened yet. I was also told that new orders for self-installs are also being capped at 640 by Verizon still. I was told that EA had indeed raised its cap, but what they did not tell me to begin with and what the guy who sold me the DSL chose not to tell me was that the raised cap by EA does not mean anything unless Verizon also raises its cap.

This whole thing tought me a few interesting lessons. One of them is that The sales guy will say anything and thats why I distrusted his words from the start. I also learned that in many instances the people working there do not know the details of the stuff they are selling at all. They also return phone calls only 1 out of every 8-10 messages.

So the story is that there is no "True" cap raising going on but alot of half-truths being told by there sales people.

The moral of this whole thing is that for new customers, continue to go with a Covad install whenever you can and dont let them talk you out of it if you can.
[text was edited by author 2001-01-14 22:56:43]

zodden posted : Well it looks like I will have to fight to get the higher cap. I had placed an order for DSL with EA in July that was canceled in Sept before I was ever connected. When I tried to place a new order on Dec 26th I was told all the usual bs but was also promised the higher download cap of 1500. A few days later an earthlink supervisor called me and told me that they never canceled my orignal order by accident. They are now in the process of sending me new hardware but I will be at the 640d/l cap that I would have had with my original order. I would imagine that I am the only new order placed recently that will be starting out at a lower speed. I guess I am in for a fight, but it was their fault to begin with so I am going to fight them to get the higher speed if I can.

However, those who have ordered recently should consider checking in with Mr. Earthlink to see what's up. As I stated above, I got a relatively positive response when I called. I had a legitimate complaint, since I was actually told that I would be getting the higher cap, but didn't. Someone said the effective date was in late November, and I ordered right around that time... I think if you push hard enough you might be able to get them to up your cap without reprovisioning. And in my case, they WILL be upping it, lest they be deluged with hourly phone calls. I know some other people were told 1500 but got 640, and I encourage those people to give Earthlink hell.
--
It's on! Finally!

anon posted : No, if you are already installed with Verizon (either old GTE or BA areas) your speed will not change because Verizon considers this reprovisioning the line, and it would mean starting over. And some people in old BA areas might not get the 1.5 down service because they are too far from the CO, but close enough for the 640 service. As I mentioned in other threads, I was one of those who was told I'd be getting a 1500 package, but only got 640. Called support today and they put in a ticket to Verizon to look into it. He didn't say I'd definitely be upgraded, but he did say someone would be contacting me about it. He had just gotten back from vacation so he couldn't confirm that Genuity/Verizon had started telling customers it would be a 1500 cap, but he didn't have trouble believing it, either.

Things are looking like I'll get it upgraded, he said it's a rather simple DSLAM configuration as I pretty much knew already. The only potential is for someone to try to challenge whether my order was before or after they started promising it, but I was definitely told that my area had just gone to 1500 cap. I'll post further updates here for those who would be interested in fighting their own battles.

-Tony
--
It's on! Finally!

He went on to say that this will effect just about everyone who had a self installation done. No matter who your isp is. He said that Verizon cannot cap other ISPs DSL customers to any less a speed than what Verizon provides. I would like to say that this is only heresay as I saw no proof but when asked about this issue he seemed very quick to respond the way he did. I'm sure there's no way they would give these packages to Earthlink for $$39.95 per month.
The NorthEast was formerly a Bell-Atlantic service area and other parts of the country may experience better service packages. The only way to get the 1500Kbps down service is to go through Mindspring DSL Max(aka...Earthlink's merger partner) specifying you want Covad.
I sincerely doubt Verizon/GTE would give any competitor such as Earthlink a better deal.
