The blogger solved the problem presented by his LG TV by configuring his home router to block the seven Internet addresses his model automatically attempted to contact. This method obviously won't work for people who aren't comfortable mucking about with their hardware settings. But even for those who are comfortable, there's a limit to how effective this can be. A decade from now, when the majority of appliances and consumer devices in homes come with their own Internet connection, it won't be feasible to block every single privacy-invading address. Eventually, the only solution will be for manufacturers of these once-dumb devices to pour the same talent and resources into securing their wares that are standard at Microsoft, Apple, and Google. In the race to cash in on the Internet of things goldrush, readers shouldn't count on that happening anytime soon.

Or router manufacturers making identifying devices easier/friendlier and grouping their incoming/outgoing requests so that it's easier to block the ones that violate privacy.

Think I'll be keeping my "dumb" TV as long as I can.

So when are smart TV's going to be free.
Aren't they just devices for displaying advertising.
More meta data is required from us......... before our lifestyles can be sold back.

Enjoy your highly valued freedoms.

I still use my Sharp 19.5" CRT TV from January 1996. Are the stores still selling new dumb HDTVs for cheaper prices and privacy?

even if they are not making dumb TVs anymore simply do not connect it to the internet / don't set up the WIFI on it.

The Samsungs have a camera and microphones, voice and facial recognition software too.

We have smart phones and On-Star to track everywhere we go. We've got the Xbox One and Smart TVs recording us in our homes. We have set-top boxes in the works to do the same, if not already. What next?

Smart electric meters, which have also been raised as a security/privacy concern.

After that? Probably the toilet.

My client's new Vizio 80" HDTV's wizard set up asked for the network, but it couldn't be skipped. I asked the Internet and Vizio's support on how to skip it. No one knows. It seems to be unskippable.

I can see it now: a black box monitor on every toilet outlet, with wireless reporting. And NSA will tie into it, too...

I'm not sure if a talking smart toilet would be capable of diverting this level of scorn to it's inferred purpose.
quote:
According to DoctorBeet, LG representatives made no apologies when he brought the monitoring behavior to their attention.

"The advice we have been given is that unfortunately as you accepted the Terms and Conditions on your TV, your concerns would be best directed to the retailer," the representatives wrote in a response to the blogger. "We understand you feel you should have been made aware of these T's and C's at the point of sale, and for obvious reasons LG are unable to pass comment on their actions."

Oh that's right accidents in the toilet do happen.

No, I have a Samsung Smart TV but it does not have a camera or mike, or voice or facial recognition. It's connected to the internet (has a web browser and a lot of apps). I bought this LED in Sept 2011 and it was the first of the Samsung Smart TVs. So, I'm lucky as the TV is great, and I like some of the apps (like watching a lot of youtube videos through the youtube app on the TV), but since it is already at two years old which is "ancient" electronically, I don't have the privacy invading crap that is on the current models.

You can turn all that crap OFF easily. I would hate though to have to pay for a TV with all the crap on it just so I could then turn off the crap. I'm glad I bought mine when I did.

It's the newer Samsung models that include the "Smart Interaction" feature.

Just enter false info and let it try to authenticate. After it fails, it should move on...

"LG investigates Smart TV 'unauthorised spying' claim"

»www.bbc.co.uk/news/techn ··· 25018225

...

It could mean LG has broken the law.

The Information Commissioner's Office told the BBC it was looking into the issue.

"We have recently been made aware of a possible data breach which may involve LG Smart TVs," said a spokesman.

"We will be making enquiries into the circumstances of the alleged breach of the Data Protection Act before deciding what action, if any, needs to be taken."

When the consultant - Hull-based Jason Huntley - contacted the South Korean company he was told that by using the TV he had accepted LG's terms and conditions, and that any remaining concerns should be directed to the retailer who had sold him the screen.

But when the BBC contacted LG, it indicated it was looking into the complaint.

or bypass the wizard and use manual setup . If there is truly no way to bypass it what if there was no internet available ? Return the TV because there is no internet available ?

LG smart TV snooping extends to home networks, second blogger says
quote:
A second blogger has published evidence that his LG-manufactured smart television is sharing sensitive user data with the Korea-based company in a post that offers support for the theory that the snooping isn't isolated behavior that affects a small number of sets.

No, you are wrong. I have Smart interaction feature! I simply refused to purchase a TV with a camera and mike.

(I also refused the picture in picture feature except on the Smart page where I hate it -talk about ultra distracting even with the sound muted).

Yes. Why would access to the Internet be REQUIRED to use a LG tv? My mother lives in a senior assisted living apartments complex and she has no internet. She needs a new TV. I'll have to tell her to not buy a LG.

LG admits its Smart TVs were ignoring privacy settings, promises firmware update to fix it
quote:
After an LG Smart TV owner discovered that his television was surreptitiously gathering information about him without his permission, the company has admitted that its opt-out system wasn't doing what it promised. "Recently, it has been brought to our attention that there is an issue related to viewing information allegedly being gathered without consent," said the company in a statement. Normally, this is is collected with the user's implicit consent; LG promises it is "not personal" and used only for targeted ads and recommendations. But it's now verified that "even when this function is turned off by the viewers, it continues to transmit viewing information, although the data is not retained by the server."

Aw, you guys are a bunch of naysayers. From the blog, I saw 6 urls to block. One of them, Smartclip was an interesting read.
quote:
People watch videos on smartphones, tablets, computer monitors and smart TVs. ... No matter what time of day or on which device, smartclip always reaches the targeted user

Clicking on the "More about Multiscreen" there is 3 categories, one of them being mobile. A mobile phone or device can be user identifying. No matter ... which device ...

For me, I have a dumb 42in LG and a dumb TracFone, so I don't have to figure this out in the short term.
