elefante72 posted : Turn off animation. It speeds up the experience significantly. Xbox extender uses a modified remote desktop stack, but there is some caching that goes on, but most comes from the server (WMC box).

I find that if you use opendns or the like it really slows down caching of thumbnails and perceived lag. Once I moved to a DNSSEC (unbound) the issues went away. You can use google or operator DNS to get around this, but it doesn't hurt to tinker.

I went crazy examining traces when I first set this up a few years ago.

Also Xbox doesn't like cascaded switches, so only one layer between WMC and Xbox if you can.

I really can't wait to see what is next for TV. I am hopeful that SiliconDust or Ceton will pick up another provider for TV like MythTV or XBMC and really blow the doors off the place. I really feel that WMC is at its limit for support, but its in Windows 7 and Windows 8 so I feel its a good solution for the next 3 years or so. After that, its all up in the air and I am ok with that.

I will say I tire of the extenders and the lack of things they can do. I would love to find a way to ditch the Xbox 360s for something different. I am holding out hope that the new SiliconDust products that provide transcoding support will be what I am looking for.
