Re: Toronto Might Have "Red" Emergency.. -20C Thursdaysaid by Wolfie00:Also significant: Toronto, itself Dfa, is surrounded by a vast Dfb zone extending all the way up through Hudson Bay. While only about 200 miles north of Montreal is a vast area of subarctic climate (Dfc) that sits over all of central Quebec. The Dfc "subarctic" classification includes places like Yellowknife, NWT, also known by the scientific classification "colder than a witch's tit"! Southern Ontario is almost a hybrid Dfa/Dfb area, as there are plenty of locations that would be classified as either Dfa or Dfb all surrounding each other, and the average variance in temperature of any of those locations is enough to push all of them into a different climate classification. It's a very unique part of the country as far as climate and weather is concerned, something that people from cold as hell Calgary may not understand. |

You've never experienced the weather variations in southern Alberta. It was 11°C yesterday, going down to the -20s by tomorrow. I've seen 30° temperature changes up and down in a matter of hours. Hail storms come out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly. The weather is crazy here. |

I've experienced rain, snow, hail, a thunderstorm and a tornado - all in the same day. In December. On the Niagara Peninsula. |

It's -18 here right now. It may have been colder overnight, I don't know. Coldest it's been in many years and supposed to be even colder on Monday and Tuesday. Now keep this in mind guys - in Fort Erie it's cold, but it's business as usual. People are outside shovelling their driveways, I'm at work, the kids are at school and daycare (albeit recess might be cancelled, I know the toddlers won't go outside to play at daycare today) etc etc. Drive ten minutes across the border over to Buffalo and everything is shut down. Schools are closed, offices are closed, people are dying in the cold, etc etc. So really guys, we're still Canadian down here after all. |

Both areas have some not fun weather realities about them. I don't miss freezing rain and 10 foot snow banks in Ontario; I've seen recent Ontario transplants shake in fear over the thought of a -40 cold snap and having to carry on like normal. Both are a pain in the ass. |

I am sick of the people who carry on about how we're somehow not very Canadian because all hell brakes lose here when it drops to -15 here. It's borderline insulting, and I've had enough of it especially when we put up with other weather-related shit that they probably would never dream of themselves. |

Both are a pain in the ass. It wasn't my intention to get into a pissing contest. It was just to point out that we too understand variances in weather. BTW Ontario transplant here, I too don't miss the freezing rain. Despite the funny weather, I prefer the winters here to those back in Ottawa. |
