Obivoice.com goes live

Wonder no more, here is the service that's being offered as a possible replacement for Google Voice for Obihai device owners:

Apparently it can also be used with Asterisk/FreePBX:

»pbxinaflash.com/communit ··· t.14176/

Now let the carping and dissing from certain other providers that can't or won't compete with this price begin!

This service is renamed Intelafone, which has been around for quite a while - since at least April 2010. I am trialing it now and my SIP URI is XXXX@sms.intelafone.com.

Don't confuse this with the service mentioned by OBihai here:

»blog.obihai.com/

It is not the same thing and I have confirmed this with Ryan Tilton president and CEO of obivoice.

As to the trial, so far so good.

If you look at the Wayback Machine history for www.intelafone.com (which became obivoice) you'll see they have been around since at least April 2010. And you'll also notice the price dropping over time if you read all the available pages.

I hope they succeed. More good VoIP providers are needed, and there is lots of room for growth.

And their website shows off their product well.

But---I see no TOS. No explanation as to whether "unlimited" truly means unlimited.

Setup fee of $45 for those who are not BYOD.

Porting fee, had been $20 on the Intelafone site, now $10 on this new site.

Plans are expensive unless you make a long-term commitment to this new Obivoice service.

If you cancel a long-term plan, refund is calculated using the higher monthly prices.

Is that carping?

It's really funny/sad how the very same people who complain that Voip.MS is too slow with the SMS program, or that CC does not yet have IVR, or that Anveo doesn't make waffles, are ready to jump into bed with the first pretty girl who flashes some cleavage.

Lets see how things are in 6 months or a year.

For every Michael Dell or Steve Jobs, there are lots more Harry Blugermans.

And there's no surprise that they'd have to be dropping prices. Newcomers always need to....

Yeah, I saw that too after reading this thread on the OBiTalk forum:

»www.obitalk.com/forum/in ··· c=7145.0

We might see even more deals before the May 15 cutoff for XMPP connectivity to Google Voice, but I'm just happy that people won't be forced into plans that have a meter running in the background. And this does seem like a pretty good deal at first glance, especially if you can use it with either your Obihai device or from an Asterisk/FreePBX system.

Only thing I wonder is, if they are not the service that Obihai was talking about on their blog, will there now be a legal tussle because they used "Obi" in their name? You have to admit that by using that name and featuring the Obihai device prominently, that could lead to some confusion, especially if they are going to be competing with the service that Obihai will offer. But then again, maybe Obihai doesn't care as long as they are selling Obihai devices?

Also, first they stated they would collect $ 3 in federal, state and local taxes( very interesting, considered here every municipality has their own taxes and fees), suddenly the tax talk disappeared. And most likely facing a legal action from Obihai- name infringement . The first impression is about as good as from an average street hooker.

Re: Obivoice.com goes live

The service can be used with any SIP capable ATA too. Obivoice sells a preconfigured Grandstream HandyTone 701 for those who do not have an ATA and they also point to OBis via Amazon.com.

I was reading a thread on the OBiTalk forum at »www.obitalk.com/forum/in ··· c=7145.0 and if you read Reply #5 it actually says they got rid of those fees. My first impression in nowhere near as dark as yours but I do think that unless they made some kind of deal with Obihai to use that name, you might see the name change before too long. Since we don't know yet if they had any talks with Obihai I'll reserve judgment on that for now.

Yes they did get rid of those fees, I emailed Ryan Tilton president and CEO of obivoice about that and he removed them immediately.

A lot of what people are seeing and questioning is what happens when you take web pages from an older version of your service and re-purpose them. In the rush to get things out, proof reading tends to fall by the wayside.

I'm not convinced a name clash battle is forthcoming either.

Obi Voice was around long before Obihai.

It sounds strange to me too. Especially paying a yearly and porting fees to a service most never heard of. Another question comes up: call security. While companies of Google size have a policy to safeguard your personal info and calls content, how can one expect that from a tiny operator?

Well, for that cleavage stuff go to NBC, there's still 90 minutes left of the Golden Globes awards---which is very aptly named.

That $24.95/year 500min plan looks enticing. Does anyone know if that 500 min is just for outgoing calls and unlimited incoming calls or is it combined incoming and outgoing calls?
I not going to jump ship from Anveo quite yet till I see how obivoice fairs out with growth and stability of service once there is a mass entrance to the service occurs. Hopefully well get some people on here reporting how the service is now and 3 months from now and so forth just like we see with any other service.

As has been said, Intelafone has been around for a while, but the [Obivoice] name is just a few weeks old.

So it's interesting that there are some testimonials on the Obivoice website, [specifically] referring to the new product [Obivoice] not the old name Intelafone, where the people are not only signed up and using it but have already [ported] numbers!

Another person said they started using OBV for their business, and were so impressed that they [then] started using OBV for their home!

Pretty darn impressive for just a few weeks!

A minute is a minute. It makes no difference which direction the call is made. For another $15/yr you won't have to worry about this. Also, I wonder what the price per minute is for going over the 500 minutes.

If you look at their SSL certificate - it's been issued on 1/6/2014 - exactly one week ago.

They can't even use the correct SSL cert for their signup page. the SSL cert was assigned for www.obivoice.com not www.intelafone.com

Edited (added my thoughts on security)

Someone must of used a template from amazon because their whole setup is rather lacking in confidence.

Apache 2.2.15 (urgh )
Not PCI compliant
NO SSL OCSP or STS

Maybe I'm a little hard on them but damn, does anyone take security seriously? When going live with a new website, atleast make sure the backend is tighten up and following "best practices"

just my thoughts

Voip has lots of fraud. Wonder if they are set for a large ramp up of customers good and bad.
