thomson 476 from Canada Computers safe buy for TSI customer?

To save time and shipping costs, is it safe to buy 476 modem for my in-laws from Canada Computers?

»www.canadacomputers.com/ ··· d=049438

I'm not sure if it has a upto date firmware needed to work on TSI network. Is there a sticker on the box or something? I don't want to buy it to find out later I have to go through hoops to get firmware update it.

They are still using docsys 2.0 modem on 25/2 profile. Also is there a way to submit a request via line (instead of waiting on the phone)? What do I need to provide MAC and serial number for TSI to be able to provision the modem for us. I hope they will be able to switch modem with the minimum down time as possible.

Any help would be much appriciated.

thank you.

Hello,

There is no guarantee the proper firmware will be on the devices. It would be good to inform yourself through CanadaComputer whether you can return it if it's not or if they are willing to check it for you in store before you purchase it.

That said, if you do need for us to provision a new modem or do a speed change for your service, you can do so by clicking here and selecting DSLr from the "SUBMIT A REQUEST" drop down.

Or you can do so by posting in the »/fo ··· avdirect forum.

You can also place a quick call to Teksavvy at 877-779-1575.

Let us know if you need anything else.

TSI Martin,

Thanks for the prompt reply. What firmware should be on the 476 modem?

Please correct me if I'm wrong about provisioning. Will the old modem be still functioning untill the new modem gets provisioned? So the downtime will be minimal, disconnect old modem / connect new modem. They are using internet a lot and I need to explain to them if the internet is down. Everytime there is problem at their POI is down for more than an hour I get phone calls... LOL...

Hence I want this as smooth as possible. If you think ordering from you will make this much smoother / easier I would rather do that?

In case I want go through you to buy a new modem, can do that online or I have to call you guys?

Thanks

Off Teksavvy website approved firmware for DMC476- STAC.02.50

Old modem will still work, when the new one gets provisioned it will stop the old one.

Ordering a modem from Teksavvy is always a good option too, they have a pretty good policy when it comes to firmware on modems.

Ordering a modem from TSI is the better option even if you're paying more for shipping compared to buying it from Canada Computer in-store. Warranty and handling firmware issues way down the road is infinitely easier and cheaper to handle with TSI compared to being left alone to deal with it yourself. The base cost is the same anyway.

Since you can only have one modem provisioned at a time, when they provision the new one the old one will stop working. TSI can provision the new modem after you receive it to cut downtime to the amount of time it takes to you unplug your old modem, plug in the new one, and wait for it to do its first time sync and provision thing; a few minutes should be.

You can place the order for a modem using this form »secure.teksavvy.com/tool ··· ormb.asp or I'm sure contacting TSI through any means, online or phone, is fine as well.

In practice, the firmware on Canada Computers modems is almost always correct. They purchase for use with TPIA on Rogers. As others have said, it isn't guaranteed (which it should be.. they are fools not to list a firmware version if they are going to stock the thing--kind of like me listing the wrong firmware on my website... why haven't I fixed that yet?!?! ), but it shouldn't be a big concern. Finally, the box for DCM476 isn't sealed, so odds are if you get good staff at your local Canada Computers, they can check with you while you stand there.

Never, unfortunately.

That shouldn't be possible. If they really do have it, I'd stick with the D2 modem on general principal One in a million kind of thing there, and it will work pretty okay really. Not as good as D3, but not as bad as people think.

As long as you start with correct firmware, your modem will get upgraded by Rogers when firmware version changes. See the three rounds of SB6120 firmware upgrades, and the single upgrade for SB6121 and SMCD3GN for example. It is only the initial purchase of a modem with wrong firmware that should be a concern to people.

There are tons of very reputable sources for cable modems out there (myself included, of course). Not that I would discourage anyone from buying direct from the ISP at all. In fact with the $20 discount TekSavvy has a pretty respectable price. Add the $20 open box discount, if any are in stock, and it is hard to beat the price anywhere.

What happened when the thomson modems changed firmware requirements?
Did DCM425 / 475 / 476 get any firmware pushes from rogers?

DCM476
We know for sure that it was only ever approved at 2.50

DCM475
We know TekSavvy asked Rogers to push an upgrade back in December 2011 »Re: Modem Reset Everyday in Brampton + Slow Download Speeds
And we know they refused. We do not know what the initial approved firmware version was on those modems. It is entirely possible that 2.16 was the initial approved version.

DCM425 is much more confusing..
We have to start at the beginning. CRTC rules state that Rogers must allow TPIA to use all modems that are used by Rogers own customers. Back at the start of TekSavvy cable, Rogers mostly complied with that rule, and the DCM425 was on the list of D2 modems that were approved automatically. And of course the 08.31 firmware wasn't even around at that time.

Meanwhile, Rogers did not strictly enforce the approved firmware requirements on any modem until early 2012. I think the 08.31 firmware appeared sometime in the spring/summer of 2012. Strict enforcement didn't start until late summer or fall 2012.

Overall, in principal, the DCM425 should have seen an automated update, but it did not.

Finally, we know for sure Rogers position is they are under no obligation to update modems if they don't feel like it:
»Re: [Cable] Should I get the Motorola SB6120 at this point? (28m
Just that they do, in practice, update the modems:
»[Cable] Firmware upgrades: Motorola SB6120/SB6121 and SMC D3GN

This entire issue needs a lot more certainty, better rules, and better rule enforcement.

I'm new to cable modems. So is it not possible with these modems to download a suitable firmware from the manufacturer's website and flash the modem myself? I used to do this with my ADSL ST516v6 without any problems.

Obviously cable modem firmware should be end user upgradable, but it is not. The misguided direction started because of the way customers are identified on cable networks.

Unlike DSL, which does the PPPoE login step, there is no user authentication on cable networks. Instead, cable companies check the MAC address of a modem to see if it should be allowed online.

Of course for motivated individuals locking out end users is just a minor inconvenience. A long time ago the DOCSIS standard added BPI+ certificates to ensure that MAC addresses weren't spoofed. For many reasons cable operators prefer to keep end users out anyway, so there isn't much chance things will change.

Thanks for All replies At the end of the day I would rather order from TSI, I don't have time to run around to check firmware to save few bucks... By buying from TSI they will have all the info they need to provision the modem and the latest firmware.

Eventually they will have to switch to D3 from D2, by doing this today it will save them time now and they will benefit from having D3 today. Also some POI in Ottawa from my understanding do not allow D2 modems anymore. I believe both Fallowfield and Richomod do not. I believe my in-laws are on St.Laurent POI and are using specific D2 5101N modem (if I'm not mistaken).

Martin thanks for the info.

I got more info today... They are paying 41.95 for 18mb/512kb I'm assuming because they are still on D2 modem. For 41.95 they should be getting 25mb/2mb profile. Hence I want to make sure when they switch to D3 they will also get the proper profile they are paying now.

So my last question is how to I do this? WIll the webform allow me to switch them over from 18mb/512kb to 25mb/2mb profile (at the current price of 41.95 per month) and at the same allows me to order 476 D3 modem? or is it better to call you guys?

Thanks,
Martin

Hi,

Before anything is done, the modem would have to be swapped out first. Once the modem is swapped out we can then send the request to have the profile changed.

If you post in the »/fo ··· avdirect forum, we can do it there & give you all the details required.

i am continuing to use my D2 modem until it gets kicked off the network. then i will probably upgrade to a D3.1 modem. no point wasting perfectly good hardware at full 25Mbps speeds or buying a D3 modem when 3.1 is just around the corner next year.

Please link your sources, because this is almost certainly not the case.

TekSavvy has, for their own internal reasons, stopped allowing new sign ups with D2 modems. That has nothing to do with Rogers ability to connect with D2 modems in any given geography, or Rogers approved modem list.

Canada Computers will accept returns for up to 14 days. The model isn't under Canada Computer's warranty program (warranty through manufacturer) but that doesn't mean you can't return it. I've never had any trouble returning things to Canada Computers.
