HDMI cable and I am going to fish it through the wall and connect the cable box to the tv that way so i get audio and video. Based on your suggestion I also ordered a 25ft optical cable to fish from the sound bar to the cable box for true 5.1 sound.

That is how I do it, although my setup doesn't require as long a wire. I think it's easier just to connect directly to the box.

I guess the only flaw with doing that would be if you needed to get 5.1 from a programming source that doesn't originate from the cable box, such as a streaming service on a smart TV where you'd need to run HDMI to the receiver. What are you using to run the sound from a BluRay player, if you have one? I use a coax to the receiver and HDMI to the TV.

I have the TV connected to my comcast box via component cables into the component 1 input. However, when i put the TV input selection on the component 1 option i do not get any sound thru the soundbar. I have to put the TV back on the TV option to get any sound through the soundbar. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Just to clarify: Do you also have audio running to back of TV from the cable box? You only mention component video, which of course is only the video connection. You'd also need stereo audio (usually Red and White) cables run from the back of the box to the matching audio input used with the component input.

Or another way around all of this is to use HDMI which will deliver digital audio and video down one cable to your TV. If you fished component through the wall, you should be able to do the same with HDMI, it's a much smaller cable.

As an aside, you have a 5.1 soundbar kit, but your current setup will only ever get you 2-channels, so you'll only ever get simulated surround sound.

For true 5.1 sound you'd need to hook up the cable box directly via optical cable. Since your TV is too old to support ARC via HDMI (which is also not a guarantee that you'll get Dolby Digital pass-through), that's your only choice.
