Could this be an attempt to steer customers toward using Comcast provided gateways in order for Comcast to increase their Infinity wireless coverage?

. . . and push other services like phone. They tried to pull that on one of my installs this weekend when I was told that we had to have the "Technicolor" unit. It never worked from the get go. I called TS yesterday and got a kid in the WiFi division because I made mention of the WiFi light flashing all the time when I was talking to the off shore TS lady. He said I said the "Magic Word", "WiFi" which got me to him thank goodness because he was stateside and honest. I told him I wanted the router bridged and the WiFi turned off. He laughed, he was great, and said that this model does not bridge for more than a few minutes then fails and the WiFi is on all the time for "external use", wink, wink. He put in for us to just get a straight bare bones modem since the house was already wired with and for everything. We picked it up half hour later. The rep at the store wasn't surprised about the exchange. She said not their most popular device. I have two more of these to replace. That'll probably take care of the last two mysterious WiFi networks that popped up around the time of their install. Wink, Wink.

The TC8305C firmware currently doesn't have xfinitywifi enabled. The default SSIDs of the gateways are HOME-XXXX or HOME-XXXX-2.4(if it's a DPC3939). Only the TG852G/TG862G support xfinitywifi at this time(I think the SMC unit does, but it doesn't have it enabled yet).

Well that's what the kid from the "WiFi Department" said why the WiFi light was always flashing when it was "turned off". I wouldn't have thought of it if he hadn't mentioned it.

Update 3-26-14:
I just found this. Might not apply, but found it interesting:
»arstechnica.com/informat ··· hotspot/

Also read an article on Arstechnica where Comcast implied that it was hard to find the OP of this thread to "remedy" the situation. I'm so glad I left the corporate sector.
