leibold posted : TurboTax was the first tax software I used. I got frustrated with it so many years ago that I can't even remember how long ago that was.

One year I tried an online tax preparation and filing service and really liked it (OS platform independence!). The only problem was that they discontinued that service in the following year (which made carryover from last years records rather unpleasant).

Once I switched to Kiplinger TaxCut (now H&R Block Tax Software) I haven't looked back. I don't like that it is windows software but it does everything I need and is reasonably userfriendly. Even when e-filing it still offers the option to print paper records for backup (in fact it recommends that you do so). You get to chose whether the printout should be formatted for filing or for record keeping purposes (the latter includes your itemized lists and any intermediate worksheets that were used to determine the values that were entered into the official forms). I know that they now have an online tax service as well but having been burned once, I'm staying with the desktop software.

After e-filing both federal and state I went for a late lunch (no dessert, the refund wasn't big enough :-) ).

I have filed paper federal tax many times with TTax, though. Just choose to print the necessary forms for filing and it tells you where to mail it. Easy. How is state different?

It is darn near impossible to file a paper return with TT. If I didn't know the program well (from beta testing for many years) it wouldn't have happened. :(

As it was, it was far too much tedium to be worth the small earning for the year, calculating the small percentage from each of almost every state of the "57" and making it balance to a penny. I first had to do a spreadsheet for the calculations and then pick each state, then enter the amount of each calculation in TT. I think TT could have made that easier for me. :(

2014 taxes will mark the first time I will have to pay state income tax since 1977 (go Texas!), but that's a year away...and why borrow trouble.

The plan was to get them done this last weekend. So I went to look were I put all the documents I would need for my tax filings and sure enough there they are ... all but one!

Fast forward through lots of frantic searching and close to midnight on Sunday I find that missing 1099.

So, tonight is or might be the night. Then again, nature has scheduled that spectacular show called lunar eclipse so there is some distraction available tonight and the deadline is really only tomorrow :) :p

Then leibold to the rescue and I found the courage to install the software and get busy. Done according to TurboTax, but I'll probably check the numbers on those tedious worksheets they made me fill out this year before I send. So far, not a bad result. I owe $26, which means I didn't throw away any of that paltry percentage the banks call interest these days. :)
