Some amplifiers or systems are built with a return path of 5-40 MHz. Not every system goes to 42 MHz. Also sometimes near band edge, around 39 MHz or so, some systems have a return sweep carrier for setting telemetry and getting full equalization from return all the way up to a cw carrier at top band edge.

It should more or less be classified as:

TDMA = 3.2MHZ wide
ATDMA = 6.4MHZ wide

6.4mhz/ATDMA channels can still be configured for lower symbol rates and different modulations. It just gives the ability for 64 QAM/ 5k symbols. TDMA is limited to 16 QAM/ 2.5k symbols.

don't think from 42MHz to 54MHz is used at all in most systems. there may be test stuff in there for plant mantainance but that is it.

it isn't that easy to go by:
2.560 Ksym = 3.2MHz wide
5.120 Ksym = 6.4MHz wide

no there isn't a 6MHz upstream either only 1.6MHz, 3.2MHz, 6.4MHz or smaller right now.

and yes the frequency the modem reports is the center of the channel so 38.6MHz is the top of the return in my area before it was 40.2MHz

Remember they're about 6MHz in width and AFAIK they still have to stay under the 42MHz boundary, not sure if getting close to it might have issues, but after 42MHz it possibly starts getting tot eh TV stuff.

also they might be keeping one crappy as they might need one that's more compatible or more resilient for people still on D1.1 and poorly made D2 modems, as these screen shots all show 1 upstream at a lesser rate.

tshirt , We too have noticed things aren't as "smooth" as they usually are. I wouldn't think the change in frequencies is the cause, but more of an indication that work is being done in the background.
In the past, I've found it is best to just wait it out. They get things sorted eventually.
