Pair Conditioning and Line Taps

How come on the U-verse forum they are always talking about their techs having to do pair conditioning and splice and tap removals in order to the get the lines conditioned properly for their HSI service? Is this something Qwest did previously when they installed their VDSL equipment? I never hear about any CL line taps getting removed. Also, on the U-verse forum there are quite a few tech that post. I don't recall any CL techs posting lately.

I actually had a bridge tap removed from my line last year when I was having my hilarious problems with retraining. I don't think it did anything though, because the ultimate solution was in some provisioning error on their side of the loop.

I'm on ADSL though. It may be that when CL upgrades a neighborhood to VDSL2, they make a big effort to clean up the wiring, clean up bridge taps and do all the conditioning and prequal work concurrent to or before lighting up the ADSL2+/VDSL2 service.

U-Verse is really interesting. Hypothetically it should be really interesting to CL's VDSL2 stuff (at least as it's deployed in Qwest areas) but there are some differences. AT&T seems a lot more excited about TelcoTV than CL does, and of course AT&T is really excited about pair bonding. I was actually reading about somebody who was very close to their RT ("VRAD") being put on pair bonding and given an NVG589 for a 24 meg service, and then subsequently needing to fight AT&T's customer service system to get bumped up to the 45 meg service.

That poster's lines were each capable of 70/12.

Anyway, it's very possible that it's just a difference in how the previous Baby Bell deployed lines and subsequently cleaned (or didn't clean) things up when they first started installing DSL in the '90s.

We still do prep, and pre qual lines for any xDSL product. If you order prism or bonded services there are two techs maybe more that are dispatched to clean pairs, and actually do the install. If you ordered service on a monday there is a wait time so techs can prep pairs, and remove any impairments on it 3+ days before you can be installed. We still do those things, we just don't talk about it as much.
