[CFL] DVR UpgradeWhen will we be able to record more than 2 shows and watch tv at the same time?
I get letters from DTV, Dish and ATT on how they can record more than 2 channels at one time and you can watch a different channel.
My situation is having only 1 HD-TV.
Why is it taking so long for us customers to get more than 2 tuners without having to buy more DVR's or more TV's.
Anyone have an update? |

said by gigahurtz:Cloud based DVR here we come! Honest question as I don't claim to know too much on this end, but will cloud based dvr service eliminate the 2 tuner problem? I imagine it would enable some sort of "watch anywhere" feature of what is already recorded, but don't understand the tuner limitation issue being resolved. Or was it just an adjacent comment on the topic? |

While I can't comment specifically, I see no reason cloud based DVR wouldn't be able to get passed the 2 tuner problem or I wouldn't understand why Brighthouse would even invest in it. I've been told by multiple people that this is what Brighthouse's answer to DirecTV's genie and the hopper will be. I would expect to see something by year's end. It'll be interesting to see what type of limitations this will have. |

I agree. For instance, would it be a relatively low bit rate streaming on demand thing or a higher bit rate file download to your DVR at home which you could then play anytime? |

this is probably the 6 tuner gateway that TWC has been working on not a cloud DVR like some are saying. |

And this is what I am struggling to understand. If a DVR still only has two tuners, I cannot see what a cloud based service would offer to be able to record more than 2 shows at a time. I would imagine the only way around this would be a DVR with more tuners. IF the shows come from a cloud source, the obviously the number of tuners on the local device only matters for recording live TV |

I wouldn't mind 6 tuners for the World Cup next month. |

Hmm, I see, then in this type of environment, a "DVR" would technically not be needed, just a box that is able to send commands to BHN to record or store the said show, and the act of actual recording is not done by the box in the home... it seems anyways, if that's how it would work. |

It seems to me that the bit rate of On Demand is lower than that of a program recorded on the DVR so I wouldn't be too thrilled if that was the only option. Enjoy being a hooligan during the WC by the way. |

they do make DVRs with more than 2 tuners now Cisco hss the 9850HDC and Motorola has the DCX3600. TWC has been working on Motorola DCX3600M combined with an ip client box for non DVR rooms and there is also a Humax IP box in the works which will likely be tied to a humax brand DVR gateway as well. |

*******
Why would you need 6 tuners for the WC? Generally only one game is played at a time, and most of them during the afternoon hours. |

I haven't seen the schedule. Are you telling me that it has been planned logically with the needs of the viewer in mind? Of course I also like to watch Formula 1 and Moto GP and Golf. I wish the DVR hard drive had more capacity...... |

Haha, given the billions of $$$£££ spent worldwide for exclusive national TV coverage, yes! The only games that overlap are on the last day of each group's play, so as to eliminate strong teams playing softer so that weak teams advance to the knockout stage. said by JumboTech: I wish the DVR hard drive had more capacity Totally with you there. I have the 500GB model and still manage to fill it up. |

Let's hope before the new fall season....maybe? More tuners would be great especially with only 1 HDTV. |

Let's hope Bright House doesn't charge extra for a extra Tuners since DirecTV, DISH, U-verse didn't charge extra for the extra tuners. Would like to have seen more tuners a year ago not making us wait for this service. Milking the old 2 tuner and now charging extra for more tuners would just be below the belt. |

"Additional Tuner Fee: $1" x4, lol But really, I can't see why they wouldn't charge extra for a multi-tuner box. BHN doesn't market the fact that they have superior Samsung and Cisco models over the horribly outdated SA hardware, so the vast public doesn't know, and therefore, doesn't care. But you can bet they'll market "Now with 6 tuners!" What stops everyone from ditching the older DVRs? A fee. Don't know enough about the history of what hardware satellite offered to know how/if they transitioned customers from limited-tuner hardware. |

Don't know enough about the history of what hardware satellite offered to know how/if they transitioned customers from limited-tuner hardware. True to your first point. Second point other providers use the 4 or 6 Tuner as a selling point. They fit it into the promo you sign up for. They don't want to chase away any new potential customers by advertising -oh btw you have to pay a technology charge for new equipment and the new SAT we just sent to the moon. ATT gets you in the small print. Seems cable is following same channel but at a distance so as to kind of sort of differentiate themselves. |

I'm sure any new equipment offering more tuners will be an additional 'fee'. It seems to be the trend now within BHN to just fee the hell out of customers rather than offering up new equipment/services without raising prices.
I'll be okay with 2 tuners as long as the equipment is actually worth something. I find myself rebooting my box at least once a week due to issues of no response, black screen, please wait, etc. I'm not alone in this issue as other family members have had the same issue for years (one of which has switched to U-Verse). I had DirecTV and while I wasn't happy with their prices, their equipment was much better than what Brighthouse currently offers. I had the Genie and two H25s and rarely had to reboot those boxes. I'm sure it's a combination of hardware/software, but this becomes very frustrating considering how much we pay for service. |

Which is why I think this is a sore area for Brighthouse. I like everything else they offer - They need to get on the ball and keep the competitive edge if there is still such a thing. Time is wasting and they are suffering in this area like DSL (old unreliable & needs updating) |

Overall I am pleased with my service as well (the price is a different story). The equipment is definitely lacking in many areas. The boxes have improved since my earlier days with Brighthouse but I do hope some newer variations are coming soon (more storage, faster, more tuners, etc) |
