Re: Bad Neighbors

said by Dennis:

When our fence fell down due to storms we didn't have a dog yet but all our neighbors did. What I did was talk to them and offer to take the hit on the fence if they just split the deductible with me for my home owners.

Sadly it sounds like your "neighbors" aren't as committed to living together.

Nope. They don't even really want to talk to us. Their dog was in my yard again yesterday. He got through in a different hole that he created. I went out and grabbed him. He's still a puppy, probably 8 months old and very sweet and friendly.

I held on to him until they came and got him. Not a word other than "sorry". I'm gonna put up my own fence. Just need to find a free weekend.

The other problem I have is they haven't cut their grass, well, ever that I've seen. It's currently knee-high in the front. The backs a little better from their dogs but not much. My main concern is skunks moving in. We seem to have an abundance of them around here.

Jon...
Do the "transients" that arrive and stay for a while and then seemingly disappear park their vehicles out on the public street?

If so I would call the local police, if they have a drug task force and ask them to run their K-9 dogs around those vehicles, my guess is that they are drug dealers.

We've almost had to call the city a few times on our neighbours. House needed painting , lawn not mowed , car in driveway for two years. Also the are horrible dog owner's. So far ive been able to resolve most of it by catching them as they get home. I tried to explain I was actually being the nice guy as I could have just called the city anonymously.

I'll have to talk to the guy that lives behind us next time I see him outside. He's a dupage county trooper and can probably give me an idea of what my options are.

Not sure on the transients. I never really see anyone but the one girl thought there are typically 3-4 cars in their driveway. No one coming and going that I've seen. I actually rarely see anyone. But what I think is weird is that I haven't seen the two that actually claimed to have bought the house.

I was thinking they might be squatters but I looked it up on zillow and it was sold last year so I don't know if they're just renters or what. Other than the fact they don't do anything to maintain the house i don't see anything suspicious.

Wait aren't the records public? I know I can pull up my house with my name on it.

Yeah I'll need to see if I can find it. I don't know their last name though and like I said, I haven't seen the couple that claimed to be the new owners, not since probably November.

Zillow says it was sold. Doesn't have a name though

I know most of us would rather not have to take the law enforcement route with bad neighbors but sometimes that is the only recourse you have especially if they are willfully ignoring their LEGAL obligations and responsibilities as neighbors.

One solid fact is that they are allowing their dog to run "at large" (yes even if that dog gets through a hole in THEIR fence), it is still loose off of their property and not in their control at all times. That in of itself open them up to having the dog seized and a heavy fine likely being imposed.
You mention that they only park in their driveway which makes it more difficult for law enforcement to check for drug activity.

The four cars in their driveway... do those two that are there now drive all of them? Or just a couple of them? The Trooper is probably going to ask you to observe their activities (discretely, of course) in order to establish for them a "reasonable suspicion" of potential illegal drug activity.
The trick is to get those K9 dogs to the cars to see if they can "hit" off of narcotic evidence that might remain in the vehicles. If they ever park their cars on the public street that would be the time to have a K9 unit check them out.

This will state who owns it for tax purposes: »www.dupageco.org/Propert ··· kup.aspx

Just search by address to see who is paying the taxes.

Interesting. It does show that guy Kaleb, who I haven't seen in months as the owner. And according to the site they just paid their taxes 10 days ago. Was starting to wonder if they were squatters. Maybe they're just lazy-asses.

I know Jon's street - I live only a block from that street in the next town over. It's four lanes with no on-street parking allowed.
