try issuing your NIC a private IP

have you tried giving your NIC a private IP? if not, or you dont' know what I'm talking about, do the following: (oh yeah, remember what you did just incase this doesn't work for you)

1) Right-Click on Network Neigrborhood on your desktop, and select PROPERTIES

2) Look in the window and find something that says "TCP/IP --> X" where X is the name of your NIC

3) Click on it, and press the PROPERTIES button below.

4) A window named "TCP/IP Properties" should come up. Look at the "IP Address tab" and select the "SPECIFY IP ADDRESS" radio button.

5) Enter the following in the fields:

IP Address: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

6) Restart your computer. Now see if it has made a difference.

Take the rope from around it's neck

Seriously though as I recall AOL+ uses PPoE, so you should be sure you have no bindings to your TCP/IP stack. (Also in Network settings as discussed in in the post above.)

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you

I've had ADSL for a year and ever since I installed my NIC I could swear my computer booted twice a slowly. It's one of the things I put up with but always wondered if I could fix.

It now boots at a respectable 45 seconds, whereas before I had no trouble going downstairs for a snack and it would still be starting up when I got back.

My equally annoying pet peev was the browser freezing. So far so good. Even if it still freezes just getting my computer to boot quicker was worth it!

Thanks again.

Re: How do I keep my web browser from hanging??????

Absolutely agree, after a call to BellAtlantic (Verizon) for the same problem, thy told me that they are updating their "Solutions Database" with this being the fix for this problem. He said that they have been flooded with calls on this issue. One this he did note that their 2nd level instructed them to use 192.0.0.1 as the non routeable IP address, but everyone agreed that ANY private IP should work.

This worked great for me and quite a few of my friends having the same issue.

Re: What is the solution?

Just installed my NIC and using an allcatel modem. I have tried linsys and 3com cards and my boot up is real slow. No one can tell me why. System works fine, no conflicts. AMD athlon 800, with gigabyte mb. Any advice would be appreciated.
