Safe limit is 10mb but up to 20mb total message size is possible. Gmail's arbitrary 25mb allows it to send/receive attachments closer to the 20mb size.

When I copy and paste all of that Base64 text into Notepad and save it as a .txt file, it saves it at 15.8MB in size... so, yeah, it's much more inefficient to convert binary into text.

I know Gmail accepts up to 25mb emails. My current paid provider seems to accept that too - at least I sent a 17.7mb audio recording from my iPhone a few months ago and the resulting email shows as 24,261kb

You can see how the max attachment size is somewhere between 14MB and 15MB but the total email size is much higher. This is because the total email size includes some absurdly large header or something that makes the email size so much bigger. A 14 MB attachment with NO message body equals 19.2 MB total email size. Adding 5000 words into the body only added 0.1 MB to the total email size.

Because I thought most email systems for like the past decade or two were okay with up to a ~25mb message size, which safely allowed for about 18mb of attachments (of any individual size) before encoding.

Seems that email is one of those things that really hasn't kept up with the times, despite essentially "unlimited" storage at so many providers. Thus necessitating the use of clouds and file sharing services even when you really do only want to send something to one person...

that's pretty weak considering you guys just updated your mail servers months ago. that's barely enough for a single JPEG.

-edit- I just tried with my gmail account and it seems to work now but it ridiculously slow. 10mb up should be much faster.

-edit 2- Oh my. Speedtest says 0.50mbps up speed. That's not good. Gonna check a few things.
