Sunfox posted : Binary files sent by email are larger because they have to be re-encoded into plain text ("Base64"), which isn't nearly as efficient (requires roughly 33-40% more characters). Files posted to NNTP (news) have the exact same process happen, although they can use a more efficient encoding format (ie. yEnc, which can require as little as 1-2%).

I know Gmail accepts up to 25mb emails. My current paid provider seems to accept that too - at least I sent a 17.7mb audio recording from my iPhone a few months ago and the resulting email shows as 24,261kb

RizzleQ posted : Here's the correct answer as per these actual tests I just did.

You can see how the max attachment size is somewhere between 14MB and 15MB but the total email size is much higher. This is because the total email size includes some absurdly large header or something that makes the email size so much bigger. A 14 MB attachment with NO message body equals 19.2 MB total email size. Adding 5000 words into the body only added 0.1 MB to the total email size.

Therefore, I hypothesize that this translates to a maximum email size of 20MB, but attachments must be in the 14MB -15MB range to allow for some other magical 4MB-5MB space that is not the subject nor body.
<TABLE WIDTH=96% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

TSI Webmail Sent OK!

Gmail Received OK!

TSI Webmail Send Fail @ 15MB

Words in body count for very little

Sunfox posted : Really? Is that perhaps only for webmail?

Because I thought most email systems for like the past decade or two were okay with up to a ~25mb message size, which safely allowed for about 18mb of attachments (of any individual size) before encoding.

Seems that email is one of those things that really hasn't kept up with the times, despite essentially "unlimited" storage at so many providers. Thus necessitating the use of clouds and file sharing services even when you really do only want to send something to one person...
