Hank posted : What do your stats look like now. He may not be acquainted with the extender is why he didn't give you a straight answer. But talk with your GM see what he can do about improving your operation overall. If he says he will authorize and extender the you should be able to get a bit more reliability and speed. But as previously mentioned you will have to make everyone aware that it is installed in your line when/if you have problems in the future. Good luck and happy to hear that they cleaned up your line.

Jaysus posted : A tech actually came out today. Luckily I managed to catch him working and see what was up. Most I got out of it was that now my line is actually dedicated to my house now? Other than that, he fixed me up and now I'm at 984 down and 384 up. Lot better than where I was and I'm pretty happy about it.

I asked the tech about an extender but he never gave me a straight answer about it. I may just roll with this and see how this does. At my distance, do you think an extender would do much at all or should I just call up frontier or email a GM and just give it a shot anyway?

Suppose I don't have anything to lose, yeah?

Smith6612 posted : The line could have fallen in speed from anything. Noise and crosstalk are common issues, often attributed with degrading copper or new circuits being brought up in the same copper trunk. Sometimes noise is added in by radio stations setting up a transmitter nearby. Other times the line could have a splice or connection that is going bad somewhere.

In the case of Frontier, it's possible that when you were first initially connected up with DSL, an ADSL Extender was installed somewhere on your line. In my area back when I still used Frontier's DSL services, these were useful for getting 1Mbps to those just outside the normal reach of DSL from an RT or CO. The techs in my area found that these devices often blew from lightning or went bad, so DSL Service would typically degrade or disappear entirely until the extender was replaced. This is another thing to consider.

Usually, the best way to tell if a line is going south is to check over your home's phone service. If you have a Landline, you can kill the dial tone and check for unusual noises like static, humming, buzzing, or other conversations. Hearing any one of these is indicative of a problem somewhere, but not always.

An RT, otherwise known as a Remote Terminal, is usually a "box" as many people see them which acts like a mini central office. In most cases voice and data services will meet up here and then hit a Fiber carrier back to the central office. Many people consider these lines to be virtually served. Other times these "RTs" are simply DSLAMs that are inserted in-line with a pre-existing circuit.

So with that said, if length is an issue, we could be dealing with an in-line extender. Ideally reducing length and any potential excess wiring (like bridge taps) are the best and quick ways to get DSL back up and running. If the problem is due to a degrading copper trunk, that can become costly to fix. Overall, this is likely Frontier's problem to fix. If they can't deliver the 1Mbps sync to you with what they have, then they will need to come up with an alternative for you.

Jaysus posted : Hm.. The thing I'm curious about though is why was my speed higher before and stable for quite a while? What would just make it get worse out of the blue to the point where I'd need to be provisioned? That's just something that always confused me.

I may ask about that DSLAM and see what they say. And what do you mean about splicing into an RT? What's an RT? How would I go about asking them to do this for me if they even can? And man, if my internet has to be down for even 2 or 3 weeks, it'd be worth it for some higher speeds.

I called the tech back today and he told me that the ticket was resolved but he was wondering why nobody called me. So he put in another ticket and there should be a tech actually coming out soon.
Smith6612 posted : At 23,461ft if that's the true distance, rather than a value being skewed by a line problem (MLT tests can be messed up), you're lucky to have DSL.

Hopefully a tech can do something for you. It also wouldn't hurt to ask if there is a DSLAM Closer to your home that you can be wired up to. Sometimes Frontier techs will do some wire splicing and trickery to get people DSL off of an RT, even when their line is supposed to haul back to the CO. It takes Frontier a bit of time and the line will be out for a bit, but if you can get such momentum going, it may be worth it in the long run.

[DSL] Problem with unstable connection. Speed provisioned 2 times already

anon posted : To start with, I live out in a very rural neighborhood/area and I've been told that I'm on the edge of Frontier's coverage area for DSL internet. So I know my speeds are not gonna be great to begin with. I'm okay with that.

I got Frontier maybe 3-ish years ago? When I first got it, My connection was stable enough. Maybe cut out once every 3-5 hours? I thought that was normal. Went on like this for maybe a year and a half. Then my connection started dropping every 5 minutes. Literally. And it was just out of the blue. Couldn't find a reason for it.

So I called up Frontier and their solution was to provision me to a lower speed. So I dropped from 1.5Mbps down to 0.9Mbps. Connection was stable for about 6 months maybe. Then the same thing happened. Connection cutting out every 5 minutes. No reason for it that I could find.

Once again I called them up and told them what was going on. They once again decided that the only course of action was to provision me to a lower speed. I went from 0.9Mbps down to ~0.4Mbps. Connection was stable again.

Now here I am at the present day and my connection is seemingly getting worse by the day. Sometimes it's stable for an hour or three, then starts cutting in and out every 2-5 minutes. Right now it seems to be stable again.

Their explanation to me was that my area was getting too congested with customers and that's what was/is affecting my connection. Given the time frame, I suppose it's plausible? But my speed seems insanely low as it is. I'm afraid if I contact them again, lowering my speed might be the solution again. And I just don't see that as a solution at all. I'm lucky if I'm able to load a super low quality youtube video as it is.

Do you think it could be their line going to my house that's degrading? I'm sure my house wiring is fine. And I've got no home phones hooked up.

Any suggestions or insight you guys can provide? I'm at my wits end here. If there's any specific information you guys need from me to help sort this out, I'd be happy to provide. Sorry for the long post, but I just don't know what to do.
