Specifically a Broadcom BCM4708A SoC, using the ARM Cortex-A9 clocked at 800Mhz. Anandtech did a decent write up on the SoC series a couple of years ago.

The issue in this case is not so much a hardware issue as is it was a legal issue related to getting and being able to use the code ffrom Marvell for the the wireless chipset. I've dealt with Marvell in several past lifetimes - and it has always been more than a royal pain in the ass to get access to their code.

OpenWRT should be able to run on the WRT1900AC shortly since the Marvel code was received by the OpenWRT team a few days ago.

I have both, on the wired side I have not had any issues. I had both connected to a 50/50 VDSL connection and was able to sustain 50Mbps file transfers without a hiccup.

I have found that the radio on the WRT1900AC is louder than the radio used in the RT-AC68U. I have been having quite a bit of fun knocking my neighbors cell phones off their own AP, from time to time. :p I's a little game we play, I knock 'em off, then they have to crack my WPA2 code so they can associate to the WRT-1900AC. ;)

My biggest grip with the 1900AC is the lack of 3rd part firmware support due to the Marvell driver issue.

SmallNetBuilder's results say that it's in the same ballpark as the leading Netgear and Asus routers in most categories, but dramatically faster than anything else in terms of NAS storage via eSATA or USB 3 (we're talking 3x to 5x the speeds), and that users who are disgruntled with ASUS firmware instabilities should try it.
