nycityny posted : Thanks maartena for the response and the info on your situation. It makes me feel better about just waiting this out until AT&T processes the change.

I never changed the name on the account because I wanted my father to continue to be listed in the phone directory. I thought there might be some who didn't know he had passed and they could still reach him. Also, for sentimental reasons, I was in no hurry to change the utilities out of his name.

I did change the gas company to my name a few years ago and it was very easy. I felt I needed at least one utility in my name as that is often needed to show proof of residency.

I'm looking forward to dropping the $47/month I pay to AT&T and paying about $15 to Time Warner for more features.

maartena posted : I encountered a similar problem about 8 years ago with AT&T. Long story short: My father in law passed away in 1999, my mother in-law got DSL in 2002 in her name, with the phone line still in his name. When in 2006 we finally decided to change this, they couldn't do it without disconnecting the DSL, and re-applying for a new DSL account after the name of the phone line had changed. I did a lot of cussing and screaming at AT&T, but to no avail. So she was without internet for 3 weeks while the change was made, and a new DSL account was opened. Anyways, doesn't apply to you.

You WILL NEED to change the name on your AT&T account to your name. When we did this for my mother in-law though, we could use a fax number to fax a copy of the death certificate, and we were back up and running in 3 weeks with new internet and phone in HER name only. But of course there was no change to another type of service.

The reason for this may be obvious: They want to make absolutely sure they don't transfer a number that does not belong to the receiving account.

When we did it, it was 7 years after he passed away. (My mother in-law just continued paying the bills, and no questions were ever asked). There were quite a few things that still needed to be changed (Utilities, Alarm Company, etc...) and it caused a lot of headaches. Some were happy with a faxed copy of a death certificate, others only wanted snail mail.

It is simply a sensitive area, you would be getting a lot of bad PR if you mess things up for the dearly departed and transfer a number NOT to the legal heir, but to someone with the same last name CLAIMING to be the heir. (And I am not even talking about family feuds, etc).

Simply put: They are being cautious and have set strict rules to deal with these type of situations. And unfortunately that means you have to wait till it is all done the right way. A tip: start changing everything over to your name, or you may find that you run into other problems.

(Hint: the reason why we finally HAD to make changes (my mother in-law simply didn't think it was needed because they were married) is when the alarm went off accidentally, and the alarm company called immediately, and asked for a password. When mother in-law didn't remember the password, they wanted to speak to the account holder. One guess who that was...... Yes, my deceased father in-law. So they sent the police out to verify that she really was who she was. At 3:45 AM.)
--
"I reject your reality and substitute my own!"

spdickey posted : Be glad that someone can't steal your phone account claiming a death without some proof. These are things that should be taken care of following a death in the family. Your procrastination about changing the account name earlier is not a reason for AT&T to make an rush exception in turning over the account to you.

nycityny posted : I want to port my AT&T landline phone number to Time Warner. I already have Internet with TW and want to add phone service for which they charge much less than AT&T.

The phone service has been in my late father's name for 50 years. The TW Internet service is in my name. I've been told by some that the port will not work with a name mismatch. The last names are the same but the first are different. AT&T even told me that the social security numbers have to match.

In order to change the name on the AT&T account they are mailing me via snail mail a form I have to fill out. I have to mail it back to them with my father's death certificate and wait 1 or 2 billing cycles for the change to go through. I find it amazing that a technology company that sells both telecommunications and Internet services still relies on snail mail for something like this. And this procedure will delay a phone switch to TW (and the expected savings) by months.

Will the first name mismatch really cause a problem and are the social security numbers checked too?
