So now I can confirm it is not my router, modem, or neighbourhood. I am in Madison and the remote site is in North Huntsville. I have different brands of modems and routers configured at each. Shortly after I could successfully ping reddit.com from my home system again the remote system lost the ability to resolve reddit.com. Then after a few minutes it resolved again. This is happening repeatedly every day.
Here are the traceroutes I got when the address could be resolved.
