There is a good gap under that 2x4 and no nails sticking through it. The injury to the cable is 4-5" away from the 2x4.
Lightning strike.....I was told that the chimney had been repaired due to a strike a few years ago. This chimney is about 15 feet away from this damage, so why this cable and not more serious damage ?
Also the blown in insulation seems to be unmarked, almost like it was blown in after.
A most curious find from a "simple" no ground.

I'm not an expert but I agree with cowboyo looks like a lightning damage to me.

May want to check as much other wiring as you can for damage.

Yup the Ground did what it should have....

My place got hit by lightning indirect hit the tree but did $12,000 worth of Damage destroyed my new gaming PC.
