[Speed Issues] Internet issues in MontanaMy internet service provider is Charter. Is anyone else having a problem with their internet being at normal speeds, then randomly dropping down to about 2-4mb/s? I've tried resetting my modem twice and it doesn't seem to fix it. I assumed it had to do with charter going digital and whatnot, but I don't see why that would affect my internet when it's for cable... It's been like this since Thursday! Is there anything I can do to fix the problem, or should I just keep waiting it out? |

Yes, my speeds have been wavering as well. It gets quite slow sometimes, as to the point of not being usable. Like you say though, it's not consistent. Any news? Thx. |

I am on a business connection and this has been going on for just over a week. Two people in the house and not a lot of traffic and I am streaming YouTube videos at 144p. Any kind of large download starts out okay but then dies off quickly. All speed tests burst okay but half of them time out before finishing and if they don't time out, it takes MINUTES for them to complete. I'm seeing lots of complaints on Facebook from friends as well. The support person was clueless of any issue in Montana or Butte but it is very clear there is one. When I called them I found that support has moved from Billings to Richmond which kind of irritates me because the Billings support crew were always right on top of things and the best support team I have ever dealt with from an ISP. My other question is how many Montana jobs were lost to this move? I sure hope this isn't the beginning of the end for good reliable cable internet service for Montana, naturally we have little to no choices for providers so these guys could run us through a ringer and we wouldn't have any real options to move away from it. I use monitoring systems like smokeping and they do not show anything really out of whack as far as response time goes (which coincides with the fact that the initial burst for a download is up to speed and then it slows down to mission impossible speeds). They wanted to send a tech to my house but I opted to wait a couple days and see if it clears up and it hasn't, I doubt the tech will find anything. I've also heard rumors that there was infrastructure changes recently that kind of coincide with this issue. Currently my best guess is they have something misconfigured with the new hardware or they are doing some dastardly throttling that is just completely uncalled for. |

Where in Montana are you at? If you are in Bozeman, well, school is in session and because there really is a lack of alternatives, up to 10:45 pm, traffic will slow down.
The word on the street is we will be going Spectrum in October/November. I do wonder though if they have updated the backhaul because 60 megs is useless without the backhaul to carry it. Feel free to message me, I have been working behind the scenes on stuff for Bozeman. |

Charter has told us we have signal issues the node is overloaded and we will get credit when it is fixed. It has been over a month we have had 7 techs including a manager out and still no luck. Speeds are so slow at night it's worthless. We will not be allowed to drop phone service until we give Charter more money. Final solution we will not pay until it's fixed or disconnected which ever comes first. Hello CenturyLink 40 Meg service. |

looks like charter found a work around for the slow speeds. A new speed test server right here in billings. So if anyone wants to get 66 megs down go to charters speed test..otherwise we are still coming in under 5 megs on all other speed tests at 8pm. |

I've been having similar problems the past 10 days since doing a clean reinstall of Windows 8.1. However, pending further testing it appears my inconsistency in speed occurs with a Linksys 1200 router between modem and desktop computer and when downloading large files (using IDM). It also seems to depend on the time of day: late evening I can be downloading three files and zip around the 'net, while in late afternoon websites load very very slowly. Called Charter and they reset the modem and we got fast speeds, but that was without the router in the middle or files downloading. I've had Bresnan/Optimum/Charter in MT since 2008 and none of this occurred before the clean reinstall, except the occasional system glitch. I know from posting elsewhere that some people don't believe that, saying it's impossible, but that's the way it was - and now is. |
