Microsoft is going to get themselves in hot water again with EU if they don't make it A LOT easier to use a local account. It is even MORE hidden in Win 10 than Win 8 and for Thurrott to think hiding it is just fine because every user needs a connected account...well, I won't be bothering with reading his website anymore. The replies mostly agreed with him! So many in this sad nation have drunk the Microsoft kool-aid. Many replied and said you can't use Windows 10 without a connected account...well I am using it with a local account just as I use Win 8. I don't do cloud crap on Win 8 and don't on Win 10. I don't think I am missing anything important and I still have some semblance of privacy which is a LOT more important to me than the supposed "convenience" of the cloud.

--
When governments fear people, there is liberty.
Mele20 posted : That was a good article. Thanks for the link!

I agree wholeheartedly with this comment from the Register's article:

"The test of Windows 10 isn't in some handful of new features or some crippled franken-Start Menu or some new flavour of lock-in. Windows 10 is about who wears the pants in this relationship. Are we simply to accept whatever Microsoft dictates? Or will Microsoft bow to our needs and desires?

Is the future to be a subscription-driven Redmondian utopia of "mobile first, cloud first"? Or is it to be a pragmatic and customer-focused "security first, privacy first" world? You have until the final code freeze of Windows 10 to make your voice heard and help Microsoft decide."

Hmmm...in a way, Win 10 Preview is a microcosmic test which will serve to set the future of the USA in particular (since Microsoft resides here) of what is important to the people of the USA and how our desires may differ widely from those of Europe for instance. Sadly, I think it is a done deal that what will win is NOT freedom, privacy and security. I think that not because I believe Microsoft has already decided...they haven't...but because our nation is too far gone to wakeup and demand 'security first, privacy first" from Redmond.
--
When governments fear people, there is liberty.
Nanaki posted : It is to stop people from keeping a beta version or in this case preview installed after the testing period. MS like most other companies do not want you to keep using beta version of their software for many reasons. One big one is people will use these betas then cry to the company about them and the bugs long after the beta period is over.

I was part of the dev team for a mmorpg. Some one liked a beta interface better than the release one so they mixed and matched files to keep the beta gui and then complained and threatened to sue us because of the bugs that were not fixed. We had not gotten any other reports of this bug in the release version of the game. So we had them send us a file list of the game that showed things like check sums and version information of each file. It turned out that they did a drag and drop of client files from the beta to the retail version.

With windows etc testers will create or download cracks that let them keep the beta install to avoid buying the os. Then cry about the bugs. Not to mention the extra logging and debug code. MS does not want these version to be useable after x date to prevent this to some limited degree. It is easier to expire the lic than to add code to cause exes to break etc.

As for why they do not just update from the preview to rc version the rc versions will have tons of debug code removed. That debug code is linked in to most if not all files. If windows 10 screams on your system now just imagine what it will be like with gigs of debugging code removed.

Basically a update to remove the debug code would be as big as a new download any ways.

Ive been in mmorpg betas that were 12 gb installs and retail was only 4gb all the rest of the gigs were debug code.

Oh almost forgot it also encourages testers to reformat and reinstall the latest which is far better than just installing over top. The rc vers will not likely be able to upgrade a preview release.

Like I said before Windows owns the desktop, no other OS anywhere comes close to Windows, so its not like they are competing with anyone and really Windows 7 was a pretty safe holding point for those who didn't want to move to Windows 8. So with mobile and hardware technology (touch for example) really coming on, this was the perfect time to make the big move and start on what OS's will look like for the next 25 years. I use Windows 8.1 everyday on my desktop, phone, tablet etc and sure there are items I'm not so sure about (sovereign application / transient applications or Daemonic applications and their need for a task tray etc for example), but these are difficult design problems which might take a couple of iterations to nail down, but so far its a pretty good start.

Blake
--
Vendor: Author of Link Logger which is a traffic analysis and firewall logging tool

Unless you carefully separate it into two components - Core OS (kernel, FS, memory and process management and other similar parts) and UI. But the problem is -- they don't want to. They want to sell you a bundle (and it clearly had been seen starting with Vista). They marketed OS as the UI how you see it. The focus was shifted in direction to show big and colorful icons, transparency here and there, while they silently start removing things that folks (especially knowledgeable) used to know and use, etc. Why they do that? It's marketing in action, plain and simple. Remember the attempt they made to do it right - MiniWin? Where it is now... Scrapped in the name of selling bundles to customers, not the OS and separate UI package, they (users) actually need. If you're not convinced yet, just compare installation footprint in WXP and Win 8 and make your conclusion then...

But as we see now in Win 8, they want to include into the OS bundle not only IE and a Movie Maker, but UI designed for a smart phone, tablets, etc... I'd say - they've lost the vision what OS should be. Do they know that? Perhaps they should after fiasco in the recent sales of Win 8...
--
Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself...

This folks is what we call lazy.

I coded vrml and the person who taught me would have killed me had i pulled a equivalent stunt like that. That is just being flat out lazy and no forward thinking.

Now im sure there would need to be other changes to the code but the above mod is a big part of the fix id say maybe 2 to 5 more lines would need changed or added.

Looking at stuff like that gets me thinking about potential vulnerabilities related to it. I had to worry about vulnerabilities even with vrml code as there was the potential for getting infected do to some bad code as it could use and did use java and in fact if i recall could use activex flash and other various techs related to interactivity. So when i was coding with java script or embedding say a flash video i had to be damn careful to make sure that it could not be used as a infection vector.
