No, you did not enter it correctly - there should not be an entry for the ADD field.

Ok so i do i know what is the ADD since they ask for the ADD as the glasses are progressive.

No, you did not enter it correctly - there should not be an entry for the ADD field.

AV is the visual acuity of the corrected eye

ADD is only required in case of Presbyopia, where the eye is no longer able to focus on near objects due to age (e.g. reading glasses). Used for bifocal prescriptions.

Edit - To be more accurate, ADD is the amount of correction required for near vision.

I didn't say I went to the optician there. I actually went to the UW Optical school which did the full tests as mentioned. I just had the prescription filled there, and figured it would be no worse than what I would get online.

I'm not sure if I'd get my day to day glasses at a big box store (Walmart/Costco). The doc I see takes the time to check EVERYTHING, including behind the eye to check for cataracts or other eye diseases. (oh and since they can't correct my vision 100% OHIP picks up the tab).

The big box stores have opticians, who can dispense glasses and do basic tests, but they aren't doctors.

What I did eventually myself is get them done at Walmart. Paid just over 300 for a regular pair and a pair of sunglasses (Which was entirely covered by my insurance). A lot better than the last time I had them done and were out 500+ bucks.

Sure it took a while to get them, and I had to send them back the first time since they did not thin out the glasses like I ordered (The lady in the store caught it before they called me), but once they fixed they are working fine.

Way I heard it is they actually order 3 pair made at that one time, where you receive one, they keep one on file in case yours busted (insurance) and they hold the third at the shop... how much of that is true I have no idea.

And this is without all the fancy treatments for anti scratch , glare and tints.

Nods, and yeah I know its fricken weird but its actually set out to continue to monopolize the market here in Ontario and in fact over most of Canada under the auspices of “medical devices” regulated by Health Canada.

Mind you, I've never heard of a case of anyone having been either caught or charged under this thing. With the exception of a optical vendor some years back who has since moved his practice to British Columbia, but that was over licensing issues.

In all the provinces of Canada except one (BC) it IS illegal to sell glasses and contact lenses online (point to note, it is illegal to sell, not to buy. You can't be fined or arrested for buying, but the stores can be shut down and fined). Glasses and contacts are medical devices, and the selling of medical devices is often controlled by law.

Only reason I haven't ordered from ClearlyContacts more is that their US site usually works out cheaper for me - ClearlyContacts charges $30 for lens coatings and gives free shipping to Canada while Coastal throws in the lens coatings for free and charges ~$10 to ship to Canada - either way, my glasses have always shipped from their Vancouver warehouse and I've never had an issue with returns or exchanges.

So has anyone ordered their glasses online from a site (I know ClearlyContacts come in mind, however their prescription selection won't let me enter my prescription as it's outside of the range of their dropdowns).

Thoughts of ordering online vs. going to a store?

And I am thinking of getting a second pair of sunglasses instead of transitions this time as they suck in the winter. Pros/cons of doing this?
