Re: Microsoft Security Bulletin(s) for December 9, 2014, 2014

24 (23 important, 1 optional) updates for my Win7 x64 SP1 box.

FYI there's an update to Silverlight (5.1.31010.0) and you can download that manually if you want

»www.microsoft.com/en-us/ ··· id=45261

You can also manually download MRT here

»www.microsoft.com/en-us/ ··· ils.aspx

That's useful if you have multiple machines (real/VM) to update (as I do).

KB3011970 doesn't seem to exist, at least not yet. Do you happen to know what this Silverlight update changes/fixes?

No, sorry. When I got the Silverlight update via WU I checked the official Silverlight site. As usual it offered the old version. Frankly I was surprised that I found the new version download page.

MS has a nasty habit of not admitting to new versions (and documentation) until days, and sometimes weeks, after Patch Tues For reasons I cannot understand they seem incapable of publishing updates and KB articles etc at the same time.

PS: Even more frustrating is that the latest Silverlight installers are digitally signed Oct 10th 2014.

And now the Silverlight update has disappeared, or at least been moved to a new hidey-hole.

The official download page »www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight still says 5.1.30514 (runs on XP--5.1.31010 doesn't) is the latest. Hopefully those that wanted the full installers got them yesterday. Who knows when MS will get with it.

Microsoft pulled the Silverlight 5.1.31010 update.
Silverlight won't run on Netflix.

I don't see a manual download option

But I found this (release history)

»www.microsoft.com/getsil ··· tory.htm

PS: Found the full Silverlight installer in

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install\

after updating via WU.

I don't have the 32-bit 5.1.31211.0 installer but the 64-bit version installs the 32-bit version too. I copied the

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Silverlight\5.1.31211.0

folder to my WinXP SP3 machine, tweaked a few registry settings (pointers to files in that folder), and voila 5.1.31211.0 is running on my WinXP SP3 box.

Take that Microsoft!

The release history takes you to the Get MS Silverlight page where it makes you wait while it checks the version you have. It tells me:

The version of Silverlight installed is:
Silverlight 5 (5.1.30514.0)

You are ready to use Microsoft Silverlight

So, I guess there is a newer version only if you use Windows Update.

Don't know but I use Windows Update and I did not receive the latest update?

The latest available version I have is 5.1.30514.0 and MS Silverlight page tells me I have the latest version. I downloaded all the Windows Updates late Wednesday so... any buggy patches initially offered I have appeared to have missed.

What OS? I think only Win7+ users get it. I tried in XP SP3 and Vista SP2 and no update (I've tried).

Dunno. MS in their infinite wisdom only makes Silverlight 5.1.31211.0 available via WU.

[As of which I discussed above in detail]

I can't find any update for Windows 8.0 Pro. Silverlight site says I have the latest version.

Try running "Silverlight.Configuration.exe" and see if "Check For Updates" is enabled.

What I meant was that I couldn't find an update on the internet. I keep that check for updates disabled. However, I changed it a little while ago to the second choice. But I'm not clear on how Silverlight checks for updates if either the first or second choices is used. Does it get the updates independent of Windows Updates?

Me either. I'm surprised some site hasn't posted it.

Also according to the Siverlight release history (link posted above) there were two 4.1 versions. I don't remember those nor can I find them anywhere. olddapps.com has 4.0.x and 5.x but no 4.1

PS: To my knowledge 4.0.60831.0 was the last version to run on Win2K. I know 5.x won't. Perhaps the mythical 4.1.x will--if it can be found.

Just found a foreign site that posted links for Microsoft WU servers, for the x86 and x86 versions, of Silverlight 5.1.31211.0. I won't post them here but a quick web search will find them

I downloaded the x86 installer and it is digitally signed by MS and is free of malware as far as I can tell.

Just had a chance to confirm this. Silverlight 5.1.31211.0 x86 does install and run ok on WinXP SP3. The patch Tues version didn't. Go figure.

Can you post the MD5 or SHA-1 hash of the 5.1.31211.0 x86 installer? I'd like to verify if I wind up with the same thing. Also, did we ever determine what changes/fixes the update makes, besides fixing the DRM bug from the botched 5.1.31010.0 version? Thanks!
