WHDVR posted : After further review, it turns out that there is a problem with the amps. While the amp did not impact the use of the WH DVR features, it did impact some if my premium channels.

As part of the WH DVR promotion, I get 1 year if the HBO's, MAX's, EPIX, etc. I discovered that channels 500+ were hit or miss on the Client box. e.g. I might get 511 and 513, but not 512, 514, etc. 531 might be OK, but not 532, etc. It wasn't consistent. Each reboot of the box might change the 1 or 2 channels from each set of premium channels that would work.

As soon as I removed the amp that was in the run from the source to the WH client, all of the premium channels worked fine. The splitters did not seem to have any impact and removing the amp did not seem to impact any of the downstream "basic cable" TV's, so I'm good to go.

The bottom line appears to be this: moving the Client will require testing at the desired location, not just for WH DVR access, but also for premium channel access.

WHDVR posted : The Whole House DVR install is complete and working. The technician and I discussed my current layout (diagram links below) and we discussed my desire to possibly move the Client box at a later date. We talked about splitters, amps, signal strength, frequencies, etc. Thank you all for the information that allowed me to have that conversation.

We agreed to the following process:

1 - He would test the signal strength to the house to make sure that was OK. If it was, he would proceed with the installation. If not, he would deal that with that issue first.

2 - He would then install MoCA filters on the incoming line and on the back of the Modem. These were required regardless of what we did next.

3 - He would replace the Main DVR, leaving the TAP and TWC Splitter as is. (see "Before Install") diagram link. The only difference would be the addition of the MoCA filter before the Tap.

4 - He would put the Whole House client anywhere I wanted, even if it was after an amp and/or splitters and see it it worked. If it did, he would leave it installed. If not, he would install a direct length of cable from the TWC splitter to the Client. That would tell us if the amp and/or splitters were the issue.

Here is the Before Whole House DVR Install link:

»i440.photobucket.com/alb ··· b1a4.jpg

As can be seen from the following After Whole House DVR Install link, the Client box was installed after an amp and 2 splitters. It works just fine, talking back and forth and allowing viewing of DVR'd shows on the Client TV.

»i440.photobucket.com/alb ··· 934f.jpg

The tech and I agreed that while everything appears to be fine, even with the amp and splitters in the circuit, there is no guarantee that I can just pick up the Client and hang it off of any of the other cables in the house. Each one would be a "try it and see" install, knowing that if it doesn't work, a dedicated cable run back the TWC splitter should solve the issue. He said that as long as the House symbol appears on the display of both boxes, I should be good to go.

Thanks once again for all of the information. I don't think the technician would have been as nice and as accommodating as he was if I hadn't been able to talk intelligently about the possible issues with what I wanted done.

WHDVR posted : Thanks. It looks like I'll be rearranging some cable runs. I've got it all diagramed, so I'll discuss it with the install tech tomorrow, but I'm a lot more prepared now.

My guess is that he'll tell me he has to remove the amp that goes to the room where I want the client initially installed. Moving it later will take some cable pulling, but all that takes is time.
