[WIN7] So how's Jan. Patch Tuesday so far?So far haven't seen any horror stories about KB this or KB that causing issues. Are we all good this time? |

We need a system generated sticky thread like this one to update every month. |

No kidding. The way it's gone lately I've been checking around for signs of issues before I install any of the new patches. |

There is a thread each month in the Security forum. So far, this month seems clean. It was a somewhat small update, and maybe has started to learn it's lesson. Also, with Win7 going to extended support, there will be fewer hidden feature changes? |

No issues like the last couple of months. Maybe Microsoft figured out what was going wrong with the development process of the patches.
Ah... who am I kidding. This is Microsoft we're talking about here.
I do have my theories though. I think that most, if not all, of the best developers that Microsoft has have been transitioned to the development of Windows 10 and what we have left making the patches are the flunkies. |

Ran WU, got 6 "Important" updates. No problems on Win7 Pro 64-bit.
However KB2901983 (.NET 4.5.2) was only marked as "Recommended" so had to be manually selected. This one took an inordinate amount of time to install too, which is odd since my boot drive is SSD. Good news was no reboot needed after it was done. |

It's not really a 'patch' as much as an update to the latest version. .NET is always very slow to install. Plus, even after it's installed, it seems to run some background process for awhile to finish settings things up. |

I liked it better when .NET was optional. |

As a .NET User (not a Developer), I only install .NET updates deemed as "Critical" (Security related, etc.)... Otherwise, the "Recommended" .NET updates just get Hidden (If it Ain't Broke, Don't Fix it...) |

I Agree, but there are some applications that I use that DO require it. I just refuse to Update .NET to Anything *More* than what is Absolutely Necessary to support the apps that I am using. |

How do you know what .NET is required for? |

The version of .NET that is installed by default when you initially install the Application itself. |

said by msmisfit:How do you know what .NET is required for? The software should tell you in its list of requirements. But by and large most people don't need it as packaged, off-the-shelf software does not require it. Where you typically find .NET dependency is the freeware/shareware type stuff written by amateurs and hobbyists. |

Ah yes, because BlackBerry OS was written in x86 as a Windows application... oh, wait. Anyway, keyword was: typically. |

The best way to monitor for any potential problems is the Microsoft forums for at least 5 days (post-patch Tuesday) before you install anything. |

Face it, .NET is here to stay whether you like it or not. And starting with Windows 10 it going to become an ever bigger part of the Windows ecosystem.
What I can't understand is why .NET is hated so damn much. It's like people put .NET together with the black plague and AIDS, avoid at all costs.
Maybe if you've actually written a desktop program in .NET maybe you'd change your tune. |

Yes I'm sure. Sounds like there were some optional add-ons for Office that required it: » www.techtalkz.com/micros ··· nts.html |

Umm... I'm not the one bashing .NET, I'm just stating that you Don't NEED to HAVE the 'Latest & Greatest' if you aren't a Developer... |
