I hate mice!!

I think my mouse got dirty inside..... The pointer was all over the screen yesterday and today i couldnt do a thing -- I tried to put water thru it to clean it,then dry it but the same results....(I put it in dryer to dry it)

What a piece of crap.....I only had that maybe 3 years!!!!!! -- I had a brand new Microsoft laser mouse I had been keeping in storage until I absolutely needed it..... (Its a bit longer) -- A blue optical mouse...... (I like this one better anyway as its a bit longer)

»www.cnet.com/products/mi ··· e-series

Would getting dirty inside the mouse cause that?? (Its a Belkin mouse)

Anyone ever fix thier mice that started doing this?? (Just curious)

what model Belkin mouse? is it ball or optical?

as if you didn't know, just about everything is made in china these days, and is basically designed to fail. i'm surprised the mouse lasted you this long.............

You.... put water through your mouse and then put it through the dryer and think that would rectify any problem?

Either it's a ball mouse, where you're supposed to clean the rollers with rubbing alcohol and a Q tip, or it's an optical and there is a lot of electronics in it.

Either way, you've pretty much made sure that it will not come back to life with the water/dryer cycle.

I'm using PS/2 mice made in the last century with real balls, and with periodic cleaning they still work just fine.

Here is an example:

I just cleaned this last week, but it already got a piece of hair inside.

Next time, don't use Rogaine.

You know as annoying as cleaning them was there was something about that tactile feel of a good clean ball mouse on a grippy surface. Problem was those moments of perfection were so fleeting, before some hair or gunk build-up got in there or the surface got a just a little bit dirty and the ball started to slide.

I use the Logitech performance MX, and like it a lot. the laser tracks amazingly well with my graphics programs at home and work. adjustable DPI setting makes it great for what I do.

the only downfall is the shitty microswitches they use---I had to replace them on both of my MX's with better units when they failed.

anyway, it is worth the investment to buy a good mouse. I personally don't like anything Belkin except the usb hub I have from them.

as aurgathor pointed out, remove the ball and scrape the crud off of the roller wheels inside with an exacto or equivalent tool. it will track like new until it cruds up on you again.....

Have you ever thought that maybe it is the condition that the mice operate in that is causing them to get dirty?

I've had the same mouse for at least 10 years and it still works fine.

I love the Kensington Expert Mouse ( »www.amazon.com/Kensingto ··· 0009KH63 ); in spite of the name, it is a trackball, not a mouse.

About once per month, I need to remove the ball, clean out the dust and put the ball back in (about 30 seconds at the most). Other than that, it never gives me any problems.

Re: I hate mice!!

just out of curiosity, is this a constant or intermittent problem?

perhaps a software update messed something up? have you scanned for viruses lately? what OS are you using?

if it's intermittent, is something hogging the CPU?

I did have my scroll wheel get screwy on my MX. turns out ONE cat hair got into the sensor area, and was enough to confuse the sensor. maybe just disassembling and cleaning the pickup sensor would cure your problem.

Cleaning them couple of times a week is no biggie, and to me that is much less aggravating than trying to use an optical mouse. I have a couple of MS optical mice, and they simply suck. I can put them down on my table, don't touch them and watch the cursor moving ever so slowly.
Never seen that with a ballsy mice, and in addition, I found them to be much more precise. There may be other optical mice that are much better, but with mice, now I try to stick with tried and true technology.

Wow, I go through mice pretty hard myself, haven't had a ball mouse in over, gee, 12 years. I'm as gentle as I can be, but they get rubbed down. Same with keyboards, the keys rub out.

In what universe is putting water "through" an electronic device a good idea?

Some fabs and shops do wash with De-I water, but only certain things can be washed, and you have to remove batteries and such first, and proper drying is critical.

I think you might have described the issue right there.

You need to put it in to the microwave, then the fridge, then the dryer...

No it just started yesterday........

Im gonna take it to a friend and see if he can fix it.... It is easier for me to use the smaller one now...... (I did like the longer blue microsoft one @ first but my hand hurts a little and when I try to use it,i really feel it now)

I did throw the belkin one out but I just took it out and am gonna try to have it fixed..... THERE WAS NO POWER TO IT WHEN WATER WAS RUN THRU IT SO IT WONT HURT IT and I dried it completly before applying power)

There are microswitches and other things that will not dry out completely. Pretty much guaranteed that you broke it permanently. With an optical mouse, the only cleaning that should need to be done is mildly damp q-tip over the optical input hole on the bottom.

Not exactly. Water evaporates anywhere if it can. What it leaves behind in the contaminated / non distilled will cause an electronic pathway fault.

Pure DI water does not conduct electricity. Tap water with all the lovely ionic bonding stuff in it, will.

If he would have dunked it in DI water and left it in there a bit then maybe it would have a chance. Regardless it's beyond the bag of rice stage, plus mice are fairly low cost.

One thing with water I wonder about: Caps and Inductors, can water get inside of them, of course, microswitches, as has been mentioned, yes indeed. I washed my old Pentium motherboard years ago, washed it twice with zero problems, but I wouldn't dare do that with today's boards. Dude, you broke it, you ain't gonna fix it.

I still use my old cheapie Logitech Optical from about a decade ago personally: »www.game-debate.com/mous ··· 0M-BT96A
No frills, still works perfectly (aside from the left click actuator failing about 5 years ago. Went in and tweaked it a bit and that repair has been working flawlessly since then). They were even smart enough to build it with some weights to give it a decent feel. Only cost around $15 at the time I got it at a Big Lots way back when.

I used to only use trackballs in the old days. I detested mice, but I'm old now and my hands shake a bit so using a trackball is probably not practical now. I've never owned a mouse I truly like, they are all a PITA in some manner or other. And then there's keyboards, they fail way too quickly, and you can't get a mechanical keyboard that is ergonomic, and so, I've never owned a keyboard that was truly satisfactory, either.

Well yeah, I don't know what it is about MS mice but every single one I have used felt like crap for some reason.

It's all about laser now, the good ones can even track on reflective surfaces like glass and mirrors. Not sure if anyone besides Logitech is making them that good though.

The first site doesn't tell you the price until you add to the shopping cart? 300 hundred bucks, but it looks kinda cheesy, I don't know, I know I can't afford such a luxury, but good to know it exists.
